NOVEMBER 3

PSALMS: 3, 33, 63, 93, 123

PROVERBS: 3

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 46:1 – 47:31

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 15:1 – 28

PSALMS: 3

1 A psalm of David,
when he fled from Avshalom his son:
ADONAI, how many enemies I have!
How countless are those attacking me;
2 how countless those who say of me,
“There is no salvation for him in God.”
(Selah)
3 But you, ADONAI, are a shield for me;
you are my glory, you lift my head high.
4 With my voice I call out to ADONAI,
and he answers me from his holy hill.
(Selah)
5 I lie down and sleep, then wake up again,
because ADONAI sustains me.
6 I am not afraid of the tens of thousands
set against me on every side.
7 Rise up, ADONAI!
Save me, my God!
For you slap all my enemies in the face,
you smash the teeth of the wicked.
8 Victory comes from ADONAI;
may your blessing rest on your people.
(Selah)

PSALMS: 33

1 Rejoice in ADONAI, you righteous!
Praise is well-suited to the upright.
2 Give thanks to ADONAI with the lyre,
sing praises to him with a ten-stringed harp.
3 Sing to him a new song,
make music at your best among shouts of joy.
4 For the word of ADONAI is true,
and all his work is trustworthy.
5 He loves righteousness and justice;
the earth is full of the grace of ADONAI.
6 By the word of ADONAI the heavens were made,
and their whole host by a breath from his mouth.
7 He collects the sea waters together in a heap;
he puts the deeps in storehouses.
8 Let all the earth fear ADONAI!
Let all living in the world stand in awe of him.
9 For he spoke, and there it was;
he commanded, and there it stood.
10 ADONAI brings to nothing the plans of nations,
he foils the plans of the peoples.
11 But the counsel of ADONAI stands forever,
his heart’s plans are for all generations.
12 How blessed is the nation whose God is ADONAI,
the people he chose as his heritage!
13 ADONAI looks out from heaven;
he sees every human being;
14 from the place where he lives he
watches everyone living on earth,
15 he who fashioned the hearts of them
all and understands all they do.
16 A king is not saved by the size of his army,
a strong man not delivered by his great strength.
17 To rely on a horse for safety is vain,
nor does its great power assure escape.
18 But ADONAI’s eyes watch over those who fear him,
over those who wait for his grace
19 to rescue them from death
and keep them alive in famine.
20 We are waiting for ADONAI;
he is our help and shield.
21 For in him our hearts rejoice,
because we trust in his holy name.
22 May your mercy, ADONAI, be over us,
because we put our hope in you.

PSALMS: 63

1 A psalm of David,
when he was in the desert of Y’hudah:
O God, you are my God;
I will seek you eagerly.
My heart thirsts for you,
my body longs for you in a land parched and exhausted,
where no water can be found.
2 I used to contemplate you in the sanctuary,
seeing your power and glory;
3 for your grace is better than life.
My lips will worship you.
4 Yes, I will bless you as long as I live;
in your name I will lift up my hands.
5 I am as satisfied as with rich food;
my mouth praises you with joy on my lips
6 when I remember you on my bed
and meditate on you in the night watches.
7 For you have been my help;
in the shadow of your wings I rejoice;
8 my heart clings to you;
your right hand supports me.
9 But those who seek to destroy my life -may
they go to the lowest parts of the earth.
10 May they be given over to the power of the sword;
may they become prey for jackals.
11 But the king will rejoice in God.
Everyone who swears by him will exult,
for the mouths of liars will be silenced.

PSALMS: 93

1 ADONAI is king, robed in majesty;
ADONAI is robed, girded with strength;
The world is well established;
it cannot be moved.
2 Your throne was established long ago;
you have existed forever.
3 ADONAI, the deep is raising up, the deep is raising up
its voice, the deep is raising its crashing waves.
4 More than the sound of rushing waters or the mighty breakers of the sea,
ADONAI on high is mighty.
5 Your instructions are very sure;
holiness befits your house,
ADONAI, for all time to come.

PSALMS: 123

1 A song of ascents:
I raise my eyes to you, whose throne is in heaven.
2 As a servant looks to the hand of his master,
or a slave-girl to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes turn to ADONAI our God,
until he has mercy on us.
3 Have mercy on us, ADONAI, have mercy;
for we have had our fill of contempt,
4 more than our fill of scorn from the complacent
and contempt from the arrogant.

PROVERBS: 3

1 My son, don’t forget my teaching,
keep my commands in your heart;
2 for they will add to you many days,
years of life and peace.
3 Do not let grace and truth leave you -bind them around your neck;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Then you will win favor and esteem
in the sight of God and of people.
5 Trust in ADONAI with all your heart;
do not rely on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him;
then he will level your paths.
7 Don’t be conceited about your own wisdom;
but fear ADONAI, and turn from evil.
8 This will bring health to your body
and give strength to your bones.
9 Honor ADONAI with your wealth
and with the firstfruits of all your income.
10 Then your granaries will be filled
and your vats overflow with new wine.
11 My son, don’t despise ADONAI’s discipline
or resent his reproof;
12 for ADONAI corrects those he loves
like a father who delights in his son.
13 Happy the person who finds wisdom,
the person who acquires understanding;
14 for her profit exceeds that of silver,
gaining her is better than gold,
15 she is more precious than pearls -nothing
you want can compare with her.
16 Long life is in her right hand,
riches and honor in her left.
17 Her ways are pleasant ways,
and all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to those who grasp her;
whoever holds fast to her will be made happy.
19 ADONAI by wisdom founded the earth,
by understanding he established the heavens,
20 by his knowledge the deep [springs] burst open
and the dew condenses from the sky.
21 My son, don’t let these slip from your sight;
preserve common sense and discretion;
22 they will be life for your being
and grace for your neck.
23 Then you will walk your way securely,
without hurting your foot.
24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid;
when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
25 Don’t be afraid of sudden terror or destruction caused by the wicked,
when it comes;
26 for you can rely on ADONAI;
he will keep your foot from being caught in a trap.
27 Don’t withhold good from someone entitled to it when
you have in hand the power to do it.
28 Don’t tell your neighbor, “Go away!
Come another time;
I’ll give it to you tomorrow,”
when you have it now.
29 Don’t plan harm against your neighbor who lives beside you trustingly.
30 Don’t quarrel with someone for no reason, if he has done you no harm.
31 Don’t envy a man of violence, don’t choose any of his ways;
32 for the perverse is an abomination to ADONAI,
but he shares his secret counsel with the upright.
33 ADONAI’s curse is in the house of the wicked,
but he blesses the home of the righteous.
34 The scornful he scorns,
but gives grace to the humble.
35 The wise win honor,
but fools win shame.

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 46:1 – 47:31

46:1 Yisra’el took his journey with all that he had, and came to Be’er-Sheva, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father, Yitzchak. 2 God spoke to Yisra’el in the visions of the night, and said, “Yaakov, Yaakov!” He said, “Here I am.” 3 He said, “I am God, the God of your father. Don’t be afraid to go down into Mitzrayim; for there I will make of you a great nation. 4 I will go down with you into Mitzrayim. I will also surely bring you up again. Yosef will close your eyes.” 5 Yaakov rose up from Be'er-Sheva, and the sons of Yisra'el carried Yaakov, their father, their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Paroh had sent to carry him.

6 They took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Kanaan, and came into Mitzrayim – Yaakov, and all his seed with him,

7 his sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Mitzrayim.

8 These are the names of the children of Yisra'el, who came into Mitzrayim, Yaakov and his sons: Re’uven, Yaakov's firstborn.

9 The sons of Re'uven: Hanokh, Pallu, Hetzron, and Karmi.

10 The sons of Shimon: Yemu’el, Yamin, Ohad, Yakhin, Tzochar, and Sha’ul the son of a Kanaani woman. 11 he sons of Levi: Gershon, Kehat, and Merari. 12 The sons of Yehudah:Er, Onan, Shelach, Peretz, and Zerach; but Er and Onan died in the land of Kanaan. The sons of Peretz were Hetzron and Hamul. 13 The sons of Yissakhar: Tola, Puvah, Yov, and Shimron. 14 The sons of Zevulun: Sered, Elon, and Yachle’el. 15 These are the sons of Le’ah, whom she bore to Yaakov in Paddan-Aram, with his daughter Dinah. All the souls of his sons and his daughters were thirty-three.

16 The sons of Gad: Tzifyon, Haggi, Shuni, Etzbon,Eri, Arodi, and Ar’eli. 17 The sons of Asher: Yimna, Yishvah, Yishvi, Beriah, and Serach their sister. The sons of Beriah: Hever and Malki’el. 18 These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Lavan gave to Le’ah, his daughter, and these she bore to Yaakov, even sixteen souls.

19 The sons of Rachel, Yaakov’s wife: Yosef and Binyamin. 20 To Yosef in the land of Mitzrayim were born Menashsheh and Efrayim, whom Asenat, the daughter of Potiphera, Kohen of On, bore to him. 21 The sons of Binyamin: Bela, Bekher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Echi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard.

22 These are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Yaakov: all the souls were fourteen. 23 The sons of Dan: Hushim. 24 The sons of Naftali: Yachtze’el, Guni, Yetzer, and Shillem. 25 These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Lavan gave to Rachel, his daughter, and these she bore to Yaakov: all the souls were seven.

26 All the souls who came with Yaakov into Mitzrayim, who were his direct descendants, besides Yaakov's sons' wives, all the souls were sixty-six. 27 The sons of Yosef, who were born to him in Mitzrayim, were two souls. All the souls of the house of Yaakov, who came into Mitzrayim, were seventy. 28 He sent Yehudah before him to Yosef, to show the way before him to Goshen, and they came into the land of Goshen. 29 Yosef made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Yisra’el, his father, in Goshen. He presented himself to him, and fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while. 30 Yisra’el said to Yosef, “Now let me die, since I have seen your face, that you are still alive.” 31 Yosef said to his brothers, and to his father’s house, “I will go up, and speak with Paroh, and will tell him, 'My brothers, and my father's house, who were in the land of Kanaan, have come to me. 32 These men are shepherds, for they have been keepers of cattle, and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have.’ 33 It will happen, when Par`oh summons you, and will say, ‘What is your occupation?’ 34 that you shall say, ‘Your servants have been keepers of cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and our fathers:’ that you may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination to the Mitzrim.”

47:1 Then Yosef went in and told Paroh, and said, "My father and my brothers, with their flocks, their herds, and all that they own, have come out of the land of Kanaan; and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen.” 2 From among his brothers he took five men, and presented them to Paroh.

3 Paroh said to his brothers, “What is your occupation?” They said to Paroh, "Your servants are shepherds, both we, and our fathers."

4 They said to Paroh, “We have come to sojourn in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks. For the famine is severe in the land of Kanaan. Now therefore, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen."

5 Paroh spoke to Yosef, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. 6 The land of Mitzrayim is before you. Make your father and your brothers dwell in the best of the land. Let them dwell in the land of Goshen. If you know any able men among them, then put them in charge of my cattle.” 7 Yosef brought in Yaakov, his father, and set him before Paroh, and Yaakov blessed Paroh. 8 Paroh said to Yaakov, “How many are the days of the years of your life?” 9 Yaakov said to Paroh, “The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one hundred thirty years. Few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.” 10 Yaakov blessed Paroh, and went out from the presence of Paroh.

11 Yosef placed his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Mitzrayim, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Paroh had commanded.

12 Yosef nourished his father, his brothers, and all of his father's household, with bread, according to their families.

13 There was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very severe, so that the land of Mitzrayim and the land of Kanaan fainted by reason of the famine. 14 Yosef gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Mitzrayim, and in the land of Kanaan, for the grain which they bought: and Yosef brought the money into Paroh’s house. 15 When the money was all spent in the land of Mitzrayim, and in the land of Kanaan, all the Mitzrim came to Yosef, and said, "Give us bread, for why should we die in your presence? For our money fails."16 Yosef said, "Give your cattle; and I will give you for your cattle, if money fails." 17 They brought their cattle to Yosef, and Yosef gave them bread in exchange for the horses, and for the flocks, and for the herds, and for the donkeys: and he fed them with bread in exchange for all their cattle for that year. 18 When that year was ended, they came to him the second year, and said to him, "We will not hide from my lord how our money is all spent, and the herds of cattle are my lord's. There is nothing left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands.

19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants to Paroh. Give us seed, that we may live, and not die, and that the land won’t be desolate.” 20 So Yosef bought all the land of Mitzrayim for Paroh, for the Mitzrim sold every man his field, because the famine was severe on them, and the land became Paroh’s. 21 As for the people, he moved them to the cities from one end of the border of Mitzrayim even to the other end of it. 22 Only he didn’t buy the land of the Kohanim, for the Kohanim had a portion from Paroh, and ate their portion which Paroh gave them. That is why they didn’t sell their land. 23 Then Yosef said to the people, “Behold, I have bought you and your land today for Paroh. Behold, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land.

24 It will happen at the harvests, that you shall give a fifth to Paroh, and four parts will be your own, for seed of the field, for your food, for them of your households, and for food for your little ones.” 25 They said, “You have saved our lives! Let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Paroh's servants.

26 Yosef made it a statute concerning the land of Mitzrayim to this day, that Paroh should have the fifth. Only the land of the Kohanim alone didn’t become Paroh's.

27 Yisra'el lived in the land of Mitzrayim, in the land of Goshen; and they got themselves possessions therein, and were fruitful, and multiplied exceedingly.

28 Yaakov lived in the land of Mitzrayim seventeen years. So the days of Ya`akov, the years of his life, were one hundred forty-seven years. 29 The time drew near that Yisra’el must die, and he called his son Yosef, and said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please put your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me. Please don’t bury me in Mitzrayim, 30 but when I sleep with my fathers, you shall carry me out of Mitzrayim, and bury me in their burying place.” He said, “I will do as you have said.”31 He said, “Swear to me,” and he swore to him. Yisra’el bowed himself on the bed’s head.

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 15:1 – 28

15:1 Then Perushim and Sofrim come to Yeshua from Yerushalayim, saying,
2 “Why do your talmidim disobey the tradition of the Zakenim? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat bread.”
3He answered them, “Why do you also disobey the mitzvah of God because of your tradition?
4 For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.’
5 But you say, ‘Whoever may tell his father or his mother, “Whatever help you might otherwise have gotten from me is a gift devoted to God,”
6 he will not honor his father or mother.’ You have made the mitzvah of God void because of your tradition.
7  You hypocrites! Well did Yeshayahu prophesy of you, saying,

8 'These people draw near to me with their mouth, And honor me with their lips; But their heart is far from me.

9 But in vain do they worship me, Teaching as doctrine rules made by men.'"

10 He called the multitude to himself, and said to them, "Hear, and understand.

11 That which enters into the mouth doesn't defile the man; but that which proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man." 12& Then the talmidim came, and said to him, "Do you know that the Perushim were offended, when they heard this saying?"

13 But he answered, "Every plant which my heavenly Father didn't plant will be uprooted.

14 Let them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit."

15 Kefa answered him, "Explain the parable to us."

16 So Yeshua said, "Do you also still not understand?

17 Don't you understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the belly, and then out of the body?

18 But the things which proceed out of the mouth come forth out of the heart, and they defile the man.

19 For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies.

20 These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands doesn't defile the man."

21 Yeshua went out from there, and withdrew into the parts of Tzor and Tzidon. 22 Behold, a Kanaani woman came out from those borders, and cried, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, you son of David! My daughter is severely demonized!”
23 But he answered her not a word. His talmidim came and begged him, saying, “Send her away; for she cries after us.”
24 But he answered, “I wasn’t sent to anyone but the lost sheep of the house of Yisra’el.”
25 But she came and worshiped him, saying, “Lord, help me.”
26 But he answered, “It is not appropriate to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
27 But she said, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”
28 Then Yeshua answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Be it done to you even as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.

NOVEMBER 2

PSALMS: 2, 32, 62, 92, 122

PROVERBS: 2

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 44:1 – 45:28

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 14:13 – 36

PSALMS: 2

1 Why are the nations in an uproar,
the peoples grumbling in vain?
2 The earth’s kings are taking positions,
leaders conspiring together,
against ADONAI and his anointed.
3 They cry, “Let’s break their fetters!
Let’s throw off their chains!”
4 He who sits in heaven laughs;
Adonai looks at them in derision.
5 Then in his anger he rebukes them,
terrifies them in his fury.
6 “I myself have installed my king on Tziyon,
my holy mountain.”
7 “I will proclaim the decree:
ADONAI said to me,
‘You are my son;
today I became your father.
8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance;
the whole wide world will be your possession.
9 You will break them with an iron rod,
shatter them like a clay pot.'”
10 Therefore, kings, be wise;
be warned, you judges of the earth.
11 Serve ADONAI with fear;
rejoice, but with trembling.
12 Kiss the son, lest he be angry,
and you perish along the way,
when suddenly his anger blazes.
How blessed are all who take refuge in him.

PSALMS: 32

1 By David.
A maskil:
How blessed are those whose offense is forgiven,
those whose sin is covered!
2 How blessed those to whom ADONAI imputes no guilt,
in whose spirit is no deceit!
3 When I kept silent,
my bones wasted away because of my groaning all day long;
4 day and night your hand was heavy on me;
the sap in me dried up as in a summer drought.
(Selah)
5 When I acknowledged my sin to you,
when I stopped concealing my guilt,
and said, “I will confess my offenses to ADONAI”;
then you, you forgave the guilt of my sin. (Selah)
6 This is what everyone faithful should pray at a time when you can be found.
Then, when the floodwaters are raging, they will not reach to him.
7 You are a hiding-place for me, you will keep me from distress;
you will surround me with songs of deliverance. (Selah)
8 “I will instruct and teach you in this way that you are to go;
I will give you counsel;
my eyes will be watching you.”
9 Don’t be like a horse or mule that has no understanding,
that has to be curbed with bit and bridle,
or else it won’t come near you.
10 Many are the torments of the wicked,
but grace surrounds those who trust in ADONAI.
11 Be glad in ADONAI;
rejoice, you righteous!
Shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

PSALMS: 62

1 For the leader.
Set in the style of Y’dutun.
A psalm of David:
My soul waits in silence for God alone;
my salvation comes from him.
2 He alone is my rock and salvation, my stronghold;
I won’t be greatly moved.
3 How long will you assail a person in order to murder him, all of you,
as if he were a sagging wall or a shaky fence?
4 They only want to shake him from his height,
they take delight in lying with their mouths they bless, but inwardly they curse.
(Selah)
5 My soul, wait in silence for God alone,
because my hope comes from him.
6 He alone is my rock and salvation, my stronghold;
I won’t be moved.
7  My safety and honor rest on God.
My strong rock and refuge are in God.
8 Trust in him, people, at all times;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us. (Selah)
9 Ordinary folks are merely a breath and important people a sham;
if you lay them on a balance-scale, they go up both together are lighter than nothing.
10 Don’t put your trust in extortion, don’t put false hopes in robbery;
even if wealth increases, don’t set your heart on it.
11 God has spoken once, I have heard it twice:
strength belongs to God.
12 Also to you, Adonai, belongs grace;
for you reward all as their deeds deserve.

PSALMS: 92

1 A psalm.
A song for Shabbat:
It is good to give thanks to ADONAI and sing praises to your name, ‘Elyon,
2 to tell in the morning about your grace and at night about your faithfulness,
3 to the music of a ten-stringed [harp] and a lute,
with the melody sounding on a lyre.
4 For, ADONAI, what you do makes me happy;
I take joy in what your hands have made.
5 How great are your deeds, ADONAI!
How very deep your thoughts!
6 Stupid people can’t know, fools don’t understand,
7 that when the wicked sprout like grass, and all who do evil prosper,
it is so that they can be eternally destroyed,
8 while you, ADONAI, are exalted forever.
9 For your enemies, ADONAI, your enemies will perish;
all evildoers will be scattered.
10 But you have given me the strength of a wild bull;
you anoint me with fresh olive oil.
11 My eyes have gazed with pleasure on my enemies’ ruin,
my ears have delighted in the fall of my foes.
12 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree,
they will grow like a cedar in the L’vanon.
13 Planted in the house of ADONAI,
they will flourish in the courtyards of our God.
14 Even in old age they will be vigorous,
still full of sap, still bearing fruit,
15 proclaiming that ADONAI is upright, my Rock,
in whom there is no wrong.

PSALMS: 122

1 A song of ascents.
By David: I was glad when they said to me,
“The house of ADONAI! Let’s go!”
2 Our feet were already standing at your gates, Yerushalayim.
3 Yerushalayim, built as a city fostering friendship and unity.
4 The tribes have gone up there, the tribes of ADONAI,
as a witness to Isra’el, to give thanks to the name of ADONAI.
5 For there the thrones of justice were set up,
the thrones of the house of David.
6 Pray for shalom in Yerushalayim;
may those who love you prosper.
7 May shalom be within your ramparts,
prosperity in your palaces.
8 For the sake of my family and friends,
I say, “Shalom be within you!”
9 For the sake of the house of ADONAI our God,
I will seek your well-being.

PROVERBS: 2

1 My son, if you will receive my words and
store my commands inside you,
2 paying attention to wisdom inclining
your mind toward understanding
3 yes, if you will call for insight and
raise your voice for discernment,
4 if you seek it as you would silver and
search for it as for hidden treasure –
5 then you will understand the fear of ADONAI and find knowledge of God.
6 For ADONAI gives wisdom;
from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.
7 He stores up common sense for the upright,
is a shield to those whose conduct is blameless,
8 in order to guard the courses of justice and preserve
the way of those faithful to him.
9 Then you will understand righteousness,
justice, fairness and every good path.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart,
knowledge will be enjoyable for you,
11 discretion will watch over you,
and discernment will guard you.
12 They will save you from the way of evil and
from those who speak deceitfully,
13 who leave the paths of honesty
to walk the ways of darkness,
14 who delight in doing evil and
take joy in being stubbornly deceitful,
15 from those whose tracks are twisted and
whose paths are perverse.
16 They will save you from a woman who is a stranger,
from a loose woman with smooth talk,
17 who abandons the ruler she had in her youth and
forgets the covenant of her God.
18 Her house is sinking toward death,
her paths lead to the dead.
19 None who go to her return;
they never regain the path to life.
20 Thus you will walk on the way of good people
and keep to the paths of the righteous.
21 For the upright will live in the land,
the pure-hearted will remain there;
22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land,
the unfaithful rooted out of it.

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 44:1 – 45:28

44:1 He commanded the steward of his house, saying, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man’s money in his sack’s mouth. 2 Put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack’s mouth of the youngest, with his grain money.” He did according to the word that Yosef had spoken. 3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their donkeys. 4 When they had gone out of the city, and were not yet far off, Yosef said to his steward, “Up, follow after the men. When you overtake them, tell them, ‘Why have you rewarded evil for good? 5 Isn’t this that from which my lord drinks, and whereby he indeed divines? You have done evil in so doing.'” 6 He overtook them, and he spoke to them these words. 7 They said to him, “Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants that they should do such a thing! 8 Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again to you out of the land of Kanaan. How then should we steal silver or gold out of your lord's house?

9 With whoever of your servants it be found, let him die, and we also will be my lord's bondservants."

10 He said, "Now also let it be according to your words: he with whom it is found will be my bond servant; and you will be blameless."

11 Then they hurried, and took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.

12 He searched, beginning with the eldest, and ending at the youngest. The cup was found in Binyamin's sack.

13 Then they tore their clothes, and loaded every man his donkey, and returned to the city. 14 Yehudah and his brothers came to Yosef's house, and he was still there. They fell on the ground before him

15 Yosef said to them, "What deed is this that you have done? Don't you know that such a man as I can indeed divine?"16 Yehudah said, "What will we tell my lord? What will we speak? Or how will we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants. Behold, we are my lord's bondservants, both we, and he also in whose hand the cup is found."

17 He said, "Far be it from me that I should do so. The man in whose hand the cup is found, he will be my bond servant; but as for you, go up in shalom to your father."

18 Then Yehudah came near to him, and said, "Oh, my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord's ears, and don't let your anger burn against your servant; for you are even as Paroh. 19 My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father, or a brother?’ 20 We said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother; and his father loves him.’ 21 You said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.’ 22 We said to my lord, ‘The boy can’t leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.’ 23 You said to your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will see my face no more.’ 24 It happened when we came up to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord. 25 Our father said, ‘Go again, buy us a little food.’ 26 We said, ‘We can’t go down. If our youngest brother is with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man’s face, unless our youngest brother is with us.’ 27  Your servant, my father, said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons: 28 and the one went out from me, and I said, “Surely he is torn in pieces;” and I haven’t seen him since. 29 If you take this one also from me, and harm befalls him, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to She’ol.’ 30 Now therefore when I come to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the boy’s life; 31 it will happen, when he sees that the boy is no more, that he will die. Your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant, our father, with sorrow to She’ol. 32 For your servant became collateral for the boy to my father, saying, ‘If I don’t bring him to you, then I will bear the blame to my father forever.’ 33 Now therefore, please let your servant stay instead of the boy, a bondservant to my lord; and let the boy go up with his brothers. 34 For how will I go up to my father, if the boy isn’t with me? Lest I see the evil that will come on my father.”

45:1 Then Yosef couldn’t control himself before all those who stood before him, and he cried, “Cause every man to go out from me!” There stood no man with him, while Yosef made himself known to his brothers. 2 He wept aloud. The Mitzrim heard, and the house of Paroh heard.

3 Yosef said to his brothers, "I am Yosef! Does my father still live?" His brothers couldn't answer him; for they were terrified at his presence.

4 Yosef said to his brothers, "Come near to me, please." They came near. "He said, I am Yosef, your brother, whom you sold into Mitzrayim. 5 Now don't be grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life.

6 For these two years has the famine been in the land, and there are yet five years, in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest.&

7 God sent me before you to preserve you a remnant in the eretz, and to save you alive by a great deliverance.

8 So now it wasn't you who sent me here, but God, and he has made me a father to Paroh, lord of all his house, and ruler over all the land of Mitzrayim. 9 Hurry, and go up to my father, and tell him, ‘This is what your son Yosef says, “God has made me lord of all Mitzrayim. Come down to me. Don’t wait. 10 You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you will be near to me, you, your children, your children’s children, your flocks, your herds, and all that you have. 11 There I will nourish you; for there are yet five years of famine; lest you come to poverty, you, and your household, and all that you have.”‘ 12 Behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Binyamin, that it is my mouth that speaks to you. 13 You shall tell my father of all my glory in Mitzrayim, and of all that you have seen. You shall hurry and bring my father down here.” 14 He fell on his brother Binyamin’s neck, and wept, and Binyamin wept on his neck. 15 He kissed all his brothers, and wept on them. After that his brothers talked with him. 16 The report of it was heard in Paroh's house, saying, "Yosef's brothers have come." It pleased Paroh well, and his servants.
17  Paroh said to Yosef, "Tell your brothers, 'Do this. Load your animals, and go, travel to the land of Kanaan. 18 Take your father and your households, and come to me, and I will give you the good of the land of Mitzrayim, and you will eat the fat of the land.’ 19 Now you are commanded: do this. Take wagons out of the land of Mitzrayim for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come. 20 Also, don’t concern yourselves about your belongings, for the good of all of the land of Mitzrayim is yours.” 21 The sons of Yisra’el did so. Yosef gave them wagons, according to the mitzvah of Paroh, and gave them provision for the way.

22 To all of them he gave each man changes of clothing, but to Binyamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver and five changes of clothing

23 To his father, he sent after this manner: ten donkeys laden with the good things of Mitzrayim, and ten she-asses laden with grain and bread and provision for his father by the way.

24 So he sent his brothers away, and they departed. He said to them, "See that you don't quarrel on the way."

25 They went up out of Mitzrayim, and came into the land of Kanaan, to Yaakov their father.

26 They told him, saying, "Yosef is still alive, and he is ruler over all the land of Mitzrayim." His heart fainted, for he didn't believe them.

27 They told him all the words of Yosef, which he had said to them. When he saw the wagons which Yosef had sent to carry him, the spirit of Yaakov, their father, revived. 28 Yisra’el said, “It is enough. Yosef my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 14:13 – 36

14:13 Now when Yeshua heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat, to a desert place apart. When the multitudes heard it, they followed him on foot from the cities.
14 Yeshua went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them, and healed their sick.
15 When evening had come, his talmidim came to him, saying, “This place is a desert, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food.”
16 But Yeshua said to them, “They don’t need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17 They told him, “We only have here five loaves and two fish.”
18 He said, “Bring them here to me.”
19 He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the talmidim, and the talmidim to the multitudes.
20 They all ate, and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of that which remained left over from the broken pieces.
21 Those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
22 Immediately Yeshua made the talmidim get into the boat, and to go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
23 After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain apart to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.
24 But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
25 In the fourth watch of the night Yeshua came to them, walking on the sea.
26 When the talmidim saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out for fear.
27 But immediately Yeshua spoke to them, saying “Cheer up! I AM! Don’t be afraid.”
28 Kefa answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.”
29 He said, “Come!” Kefa went down from the boat, and walked on the waters to come to Yeshua.
30 But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Yeshua stretched forth his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
32 When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.
33 Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, “You are truly the Son of God!”
34 When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Ginosar.
35 When the men of that place recognized him, they sent into all that region round about, and brought to him all who were sick,
36 and they begged him that they might only touch the tzitzit of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.

NOVEMBER 1

PSALMS: 1, 31, 61, 91, 121

PROVERBS: 1

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 42:18 – 43:34

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 13:47 – 14:12

PSALMS: 1

1 How blessed are those who reject the advice of the wicked,
don’t stand on the way of sinners or sit where scoffers sit!
2 Their delight is in ADONAI’s Torah;
on his Torah they meditate day and night.
3 They are like trees planted by streams -they bear their fruit in season,
their leaves never wither, everything they do succeeds.
4 Not so the wicked, who are like chaff driven by the wind.
5 For this reason the wicked won’t stand up to the judgment,
nor will sinners at the gathering of the righteous.
6 For ADONAI watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked is doomed.

PSALMS: 31

1 For the leader.
A psalm of David:
In you, ADONAI, I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame;
in your justice, save me!
2 Turn your ear toward me, come quickly to my rescue,
be for me a rock of strength, a fortress to keep me safe.
3 Since you are my rock and fortress, lead me and guide me for your name’s sake.
4 Free me from the net they have hidden to catch me, because you are my strength.
5 Into your hand I commit my spirit;
you will redeem me, ADONAI, God of truth.
6 I hate those who serve worthless idols;
as for me, I trust in ADONAI.
7  I will rejoice and be glad in your grace,
for you see my affliction,
you know how distressed I am.
8 You did not hand me over to the enemy;
you set my feet where I can move freely.
9 Show me favor, ADONAI, for I am in trouble.
My eyes grow dim with anger, my soul and body as well.
10 For my life is worn out with sorrow and my years with sighing;
my strength gives out under my guilt, and my bones are wasting away.
11 I am scorned by all my adversaries, and even more by my neighbors;
even to acquaintances I am an object of fear when they see me in the street,
they turn away from me.
12 Like a dead man, I have passed from their minds;
I have become like a broken pot.
13 All I hear is whispering, terror is all around me;
they plot together against me, scheming to take my life.
14 But I, I trust in you, ADONAI; I say, “You are my God.”
15 My times are in your hand;
rescue me from my enemies’ power, from those who persecute me.
16 Make your face shine on your servant;
in your grace, save me.
17 ADONAI, don’t let me be put to shame,
for I have called on you;
let the wicked be put to shame, l
et them be silenced in Sh’ol.
18 May lying lips be struck dumb,
that speak insolently against the righteous with such pride and contempt.
19 But oh, how great is your goodness,
which you have stored up for those who fear you,
which you do for those who take refuge in you, before people’s very eyes!
20 In the shelter of your presence you hide them from human plots,
you conceal them in your shelter, safe from contentious tongues.
21 Blessed be ADONAI!
For he has shown me his amazing grace when I was in a city under siege.
22 As for me, in my alarm I said, “I have been cut off from your sight!
“Nevertheless, you heard my pleas when I cried out to you.
23 Love ADONAI, you faithful of his.
ADONAI preserves the loyal, but the proud he repays in full.
24 Be strong, and fill your hearts with courage,
all of you who hope in ADONAI.

PSALMS: 91

1 You who live in the shelter of ‘Elyon,
who spend your nights in the shadow of Shaddai,
2 who say to ADONAI,
“My refuge!
My fortress!
My God, in whom I trust!”
3 he will rescue you from the trap of the hunter and from the plague of calamities;
4 he will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his truth is a shield and protection.
5 You will not fear the terrors of night or the arrow that flies by day,
6 or the plague that roams in the dark,
or the scourge that wreaks havoc at noon.
7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand;
but it won’t come near you.
8 Only keep your eyes open, and you will see how the wicked are punished.
9 For you have made ADONAI, the Most High,
who is my refuge, your dwelling-place.
10 No disaster will happen to you,
no calamity will come near your tent;
11 for he will order his angels to care for you and guard you wherever you go.
12 They will carry you in their hands,
so that you won’t trip on a stone.
13 You will tread down lions and snakes,
young lions and serpents you will trample underfoot.
14 “Because he loves me, I will rescue him;
because he knows my name, I will protect him.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him.
I will be with him when he is in trouble.
I will extricate him and bring him honor.
16 I will satisfy him with long life and show him my salvation.”

PSALMS: 121

1 A song of ascents:
If I raise my eyes to the hills,
from where will my help come?
2 My help comes from ADONAI,
the maker of heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot slip -your guardian is not asleep.
4 No, the guardian of Isra’el never slumbers or sleeps.
5 ADONAI is your guardian; at your right hand
ADONAI provides you with shade
6 the sun can’t strike you during the day or even the moon at night.
7 ADONAI will guard you against all harm;
he will guard your life.
8 ADONAI will guard your coming and going from now on and forever.

PROVERBS: 1

1 The proverbs of Shlomo the son of David, king of Isra’el,
2 are for learning about wisdom and discipline; f
or understanding words expressing deep insight;
3 for gaining an intelligently disciplined life,
doing what is right, just and fair;
4 for endowing with caution those who don’t think and the
young person with knowledge and discretion.
5 Someone who is already wise will hear and learn still more;
someone who already understands will gain the ability to counsel well;
6 he will understand proverbs, obscure expressions,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.
7 The fear of ADONAI is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
8 My son, heed the discipline of your father,
and do not abandon the teaching of your mother;
9 they will be a garland to grace your head,
a medal of honor for your neck.
10 My son, if sinners entice you,
don’t go along with them.
11 Suppose they say, “Come with us:
we’ll ambush somebody and kill him,
we’ll waylay some harmless soul, just for fun;
12 we’ll swallow him alive, like Sh’ol, whole,
like those who descend to the pit;
13 we’ll find everything he has of value,
we’ll fill our homes with loot!
14 Throw in your lot with us;
we’ll share a common purse”-
15 my son, don’t go along with them,
don’t set foot on their path;
16 Their feet run to evil, they rush to shed blood.
17 For in vain is the net baited if any bird can see it;
18 rather, they are ambushing themselves
to shed their own blood, waylaying themselves.
19 So are the ways of all greedy for gain -it takes the lives of those who get it.
20 Wisdom calls aloud in the open air and raises her voice in the public places;
21 she calls out at streetcorners and speaks out at entrances to city gates:
22 “How long, you whose lives have no purpose,
will you love thoughtless living?
How long will scorners find pleasure in mocking?
How long will fools hate knowledge?
23 Repent when I reprove -I will pour out my spirit to you,
I will make my words known to you.
24 Because you refused when I called,
and no one paid attention when I put out my hand,
25 but instead you neglected my counsel and would not accept my reproof;
26 I, in turn, will laugh at your distress,
and mock when terror comes over you
27 yes, when terror overtakes you like a storm and your disaster approaches like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble assail you.
28 Then they will call me, but I won’t answer;
they will seek me earnestly, but they won’t find me.
29 Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of ADONAI,
30 they refused my counsel and despised my reproof.
31 So they will bear the consequences of their own way
and be overfilled with their own schemes.
32 For the aimless wandering of the thoughtless will kill them,
and the smug overconfidence of fools will destroy them;
33 but those who pay attention to me will live securely,
untroubled by fear of misfortune.”

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 42:18 – 43:34

42:18 Yosef said to them the third day, “Do this, and live, for I fear God. 19 If you are honest men, then let one of your brothers be bound in your prison-house; but you go, carry grain for the famine of your houses. 20 Bring your youngest brother to me; so will your words be verified, and you won’t die.” They did so. 21 They said one to another, “We are most assuredly guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us, and we wouldn’t listen. Therefore this distress has come on us.” 22 Re’uven answered them, saying, “Didn’t I tell you, saying, ‘Don’t sin against the child,’ and you wouldn’t listen? Therefore also, behold, his blood is required.” 23 They didn’t know that Yosef understood them; for there was an interpreter between them. 24 He turned himself about from them, and wept, and he returned to them, and spoke to them, and took Shimon from among them, and bound him before their eyes.

25 Then Yosef commanded to fill their vessels with grain, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provisions for the way. Thus was it done to them

26 They loaded their donkeys with their grain, and departed from there.

27 As one of them opened his sack to give his donkey food in the lodging-place, he saw his money. Behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.

28 He said to his brothers, "My money is restored! Behold, it is even in my sack." Their hearts failed them, and they turned trembling one to another, saying, "What is this that God has done to us?"

29 They came to Yaakov their father to the land of Kanaan, and told him all that had befallen them, saying,

30 "The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly with us, and took us for spies of the country. 31 We said to him, 'We are honest men. We are no spies.

32 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Kanaan.’ 33 The man, the lord of the land, said to us, ‘Hereby will I know that you are honest men. Leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for the famine of your houses, and go your way. 34 Bring your youngest brother to me. Then will I know that you are not spies, but that you are honest men. So will I deliver you your brother, and you shall trade in the land.'” 35 It happened as they emptied their sacks, that behold, every man’s bundle of money was in his sack. When they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid. 36 Yaakov, their father, said to them, "You have bereaved me of my children! Yosef is no more, Shimon is no more, and you want to take Binyamin away. All these things are against me.” 37 Re’uven spoke to his father, saying, “Kill my two sons, if I don’t bring him to you. Deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to you again.” 38 He said, “My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left. If harm befall him by the way in which you go, then you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to She’ol.”

43:1 The famine was severe in the land. 2 It happened, when they had eaten up the grain which they had brought out of Mitzrayim, their father said to them, “Go again, buy us a little food.” 3 Yehudah spoke to him, saying, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’ 4 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food, 5 but if you will not send him, we will not go down, for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.'” 6 Yisra’el said, “Why did you treat me so badly, telling the man that you had another brother?” 7 They said, “The man asked directly concerning ourselves, and concerning our relatives, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?’ We just answered his questions. Is there any way we could know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down?'” 8 Yehudah said to Yisra’el, his father, “Send the boy with me, and we will arise and go, so that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones. 9 I will be collateral for him. From my hand will you require him. If I don’t bring him to you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever, 10 for unless we had lingered, surely we would have returned a second time by now.” 11 Their father, Yisra’el, said to them, “If it be so now, do this. Take from the choice fruits of the land in your vessels, and carry down a present for the man, a little balm, a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts, and almonds; 12 and take double money in your hand, with the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks carry again in your hand. Perhaps it was an oversight. 13 Take also your brother, and arise, go again to the man. 14 May El Shaddai give you mercy before the man, that he may release to you your other brother and Binyamin. If I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.” 15 The men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Binyamin; and rose up, went down to Mitzrayim, and stood before Yosef. 16 When Yosef saw Binyamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and butcher an animal, and make ready; for the men will dine with me at noon.” 17  The man did as Yosef commanded, and the man brought the men to Yosef’s house. 18 The men were afraid, because they were brought to Yosef’s house; and they said, “Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall on us, and take us for bondservants, along with our donkeys.” 19 They came near to the steward of Yosef’s house, and they spoke to him at the door of the house, 20 and said, “Oh, my lord, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food: 21 and it happened, when we came to the lodging-place, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. We have brought it again in our hand.
22 Other money have we brought down in our hand to buy food. We don’t know who put our money in our sacks.” 23 He said, “Shalom be to you. Don’t be afraid. Your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks. I received your money.” He brought Shim`on out to them. 24 The man brought the men into Yosef’s house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet. He gave their donkeys provender. 25 They made ready the present for Yosef’s coming at noon, for they heard that they should eat bread there. 26 When Yosef came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed down themselves to him to the eretz. 27  He asked them of their welfare, and said, “Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he yet alive?” 28 They said, “Your servant, our father, is well. He is still alive.” They bowed the head, and did homage. 29 He lifted up his eyes, and saw Binyamin, his brother, his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me?” He said, “God be gracious to you, my son.” 30 Yosef made haste; for his heart yearned over his brother: and he sought a place to weep; and he entered into his room, and wept there. 31 He washed his face, and came out. He controlled himself, and said, “Serve the meal.” 32 They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Mitzrim, that ate with him, by themselves, because the Mitzrim don’t eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Mitzrim. 33 They sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth, and the men marveled one with another. 34 He sent portions to them from before him, but Binyamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. They drank, and were merry with him.

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 13:47 – 14:12

13:47 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a dragnet, that was cast into the sea, and gathered some fish of every kind, 48 which, when it was filled, they drew up on the beach. They sat down, and gathered the good into containers, but the bad they threw away. 49 So will it be in the end of the world. The angels will come forth, and separate the wicked from among the righteous, 50 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.” 51 Yeshua said to them, “Have you understood all these things?” They answered him, “Yes, Lord.” 52 He said to them, “Therefore, every Sofer who has been made a talmid to the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who is a householder, who brings forth out of his treasure new and old things.” 53 It happened that when Yeshua had finished these parables, he departed from there. 54 Coming into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, so much that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom, and these mighty works? 55 Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother called Miryam, and his brothers, Yaakov, Yosi, Shimon, and Yehudah? 56 Aren’t all of his sisters with us? Where, then did this man get all of these things?” 57 They were offended by him. But Yeshua said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and in his own house.” 58 He didn’t do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

14:1 At that time, Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Yeshua, 2 and said to his servants, “This is Yochanan the immerser. He is risen from the dead. That is why these powers work in him.” 3 For Herod had laid hold of Yochanan, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Pilipos’s wife. 4 For Yochanan said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5 When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. 6 But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod. 7 Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask. 8 She, being put forward by her mother, said, “Give me here on a platter the head of Yochanan the immerser.” 9 The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oaths, and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded it to be given, 10and he sent and beheaded Yochanan in the prison. 11 His head was brought on a platter, and given to the young lady: and she brought it to her mother. 12 His talmidim came, and took up the body, and buried it; and they went and told Yeshua.

OCTOBER 31

PSALMS:  31, 61, 91, 121

PROVERBS:  31

OLD TESTAMENT:  GENESIS 41:17 – 42:17

NEW TESTAMENT:  MATTHEW 13:24 – 46

PSALMS:  31

1 In you, LORD, do I take refuge.

Let me never be put to shame:

Deliver me in your righteousness.

2 Bow down your ear to me.

Deliver me speedily.

Be to me a strong rock,

A house of defense to save me.

3 For you are my rock and my fortress,

Therefore for your name’s sake lead me and guide me.

4 Pluck me out of the net that they have laid secretly for me,

For you are my stronghold.

5 Into your hand I commend my spirit.

You redeem me, LORD, God of truth.

6 I hate those who regard lying vanities,

But I trust in the LORD.

7 I will be glad and rejoice in your loving kindness,

For you have seen my affliction.

You have known my soul in adversities.

8 You have not shut me up into the hand of the enemy.

You have set my feet in a large place.

9 Have mercy on me, LORD, for I am in distress.

My eye, my soul, and my body waste away with grief.

10 For my life is spent with sorrow,

My years with sighing.

My strength fails because of my iniquity.

My bones are wasted away.

11 Because of all my adversaries

I have become utterly contemptible to my neighbors,

A fear to my acquaintances.

Those who saw me on the street fled from me.

12 I am forgotten from their hearts like a dead man.

I am like broken pottery.

13 For I have heard the slander of many, terror on every side,

While they conspire together against me,

They plot to take away my life.

14 But I trust in you, LORD.

I said, You are my God.

15 My times are in your hand.

Deliver me from the hand of my enemies,

and from those who persecute me.

16 Make your face to shine on your servant.

Save me in your loving kindness.

17 Let me not be put to shame, LORD,

for I have called on you.

Let the wicked be put to shame.

Let them be silent in She’ol.

18 Let the lying lips be mute,

Which speak against the righteous insolently,

with pride and contempt.

19 Oh how great is your goodness,

Which you have laid up for those who fear you,

‘Which you have worked for those who take refuge in you,

Before the sons of men!

20 In the covert of your presence will you hide them from the plotting of man.

You will keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

21 Praise be to the LORD,

For he has shown me his marvelous loving kindness in a strong city.

22 As for me, I said in my haste,

“I am cut off from before your eyes.”

Nevertheless you heard the voice of my petitions when I cried to you.

23 Oh love the LORD, all you his holy ones!

The LORD preserves the faithful,

And pays back him who deals proudly in full.

24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage,

All you who hope in the LORD.

PSALMS:  61

1 Hear my cry, God.

Listen to my prayer.

2 From the end of the eretz,

I will call to you, when my heart is overwhelmed.

Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

3 For you have been a refuge for me,

A strong tower from the enemy.

4 I will dwell in your tent forever.

I will take refuge in the shelter of your wings.

Selah.

5 For you, God, have heard my vows.

You have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.

6 You will prolong the king’s life;

His years shall be for generations.

7 He shall be enthroned in God’s presence forever.

Appoint your loving kindness and truth,

that they may preserve him.

8 So I will sing praise to your name forever,

That I may fulfill my vows daily.

PSALMS:  91

1 He who dwells in the secret place of Ha`Elyon

Will rest in the shadow of Shaddai.

2 I will say of the LORD,

“He is my refuge and my fortress;

My God, in whom I trust.”

3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler,

From the deadly pestilence.

4 He will cover you with his pinions.

Under his wings you will take refuge.

His truth is a shield and a buckler.

5 You will not be afraid of the terror by night,

Nor of the arrow that flies by day;

6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,

Nor of the destruction that wastes at noonday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side,

And ten thousand at your right hand;

But it will not come near you.

8 You will only look with your eyes,

And see the reward of the wicked.

9 For you, LORD, are my refuge!

You have made Ha`Elyon your habitation.

10 No evil shall happen to you,

Neither shall any plague come near your dwelling.

11 For he will give his angels charge over you,

To guard you in all your ways.

12 They will bear you up in their hands,

So that you won’t dash your foot against a stone.

13 You will tread on the lion and cobra.

You will trample the young lion and the serpent underfoot.

14 “Because he has set his love on me, therefore I will deliver him.

I will set him on high, because he has known my name.

15 He will call on me, and I will answer him.

I will be with him in trouble.

I will deliver him, and honor him.

16 I will satisfy him with long life,

And show him my yeshu`ah.”

PSALMS:  121

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills.

Where does my help come from?

2 My help comes from the LORD,

Who made heaven and eretz.

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved.

He who keeps you will not slumber.

4 Behold, he who keeps Yisra’el

Will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The LORD is your keeper.

The LORD is your shade on your right hand.

6 The sun will not harm you by day,

Nor the moon by night.

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil.

He will keep your soul.

8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in,

From this time forth, and forevermore.

PROVERBS:  31

1 The words of king Lemo’el;

the oracle which his mother taught him.

2 “Oh, my son!” Oh, son of my womb!

Oh, son of my vows!

3 Don’t give your strength to women,

Nor your ways to that which destroys kings.

4 It is not for kings, Lemo’el;

it is not for kings to drink wine;

Nor for princes to say, ‘Where is strong drink?’

5 Lest they drink, and forget the law,

And pervert the justice due to anyone who is afflicted.

6 Give strong drink to him who is ready to perish;

And wine to the bitter in soul:

7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty,

And remember his misery no more.

8 Open your mouth for the mute,

In the cause of all who are left desolate.

9 Open your mouth, judge righteously,

And serve justice to the poor and needy.”

10 Who can find a worthy woman?

For her price is far above rubies.

11 The heart of her husband trusts in her.

He shall have no lack of gain.

12 She does him good, and not harm,

All the days of her life.

13 She seeks wool and flax,

And works eagerly with her hands.

14 She is like the merchant ships.

She brings her bread from afar.

15 She rises also while it is yet night,

Gives food to her household,

And portions for her servant girls.

16 She considers a field, and buys it.

With the fruit of her hands, she plants a vineyard.

17 She girds her loins with strength,

And makes her arms strong.

18 She perceives that her merchandise is profitable.

Her lamp doesn’t go out by night.

19 She lays her hands to the distaff,

And her hands hold the spindle.

20 She opens her arms to the poor;

Yes, she extends her hands to the needy.

21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household;

For all her household are clothed with scarlet.

22 She makes for herself carpets of tapestry.

Her clothing is fine linen and purple.

23 Her husband is respected in the gates,

When he sits among the Zakenim of the land.

24 She makes linen garments and sells them,

And delivers sashes to the merchant.

25 Strength and dignity are her clothing.

She laughs at the time to come.

26 She opens her mouth with wisdom.

Faithful instruction is on her tongue.

27 She looks well to the ways of her household,

And doesn’t eat the bread of idleness.

28 Her children rise up and call her blessed.

Her husband also praises her:

29 “Many women do noble things,

But you excel them all.”

30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain;

But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.

31 Give her of the fruit of her hands;

Let her works praise her in the gates.

OLD TESTAMENT:  GENESIS 41:17 – 42:17

41:17  Par`oh spoke to Yosef, “In my dream, behold, I stood on the brink of the river: 18 and, behold, there came up out of the river seven cattle, fat-fleshed and well-favored. They fed in the reed-grass, 19 and, behold, seven other cattle came up after them, poor and very ill-favored and lean-fleshed, such as I never saw in all the land of Mitzrayim for badness. 20 The lean and ill-favored cattle ate up the first seven fat cattle, 21 and when they had eaten them up, it couldn’t be known that they had eaten them, but they were still ill-favored, as at the beginning. So I awoke. 22 I saw in my dream, and, behold, seven ears came up on one stalk, full and good: 23 and, behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them. 24 The thin ears swallowed up the seven good ears. I told it to the magicians; but there was no one who could explain it to me.” 25 Yosef said to Par`oh, “The dream of Par`oh is one. What God is about to do he has declared to Par`oh. 26 The seven good cattle are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years. The dream is one. 27  The seven lean and ill-favored cattle that came up after them are seven years, and also the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind; they will be seven years of famine. 28 That is the thing which I spoke to Par`oh. What God is about to do he has shown to Par`oh. 29 Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Mitzrayim. 30 There will arise after them seven years of famine, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Mitzrayim. The famine will consume the land, 31 and the plenty will not be known in the land by reason of that famine which follows; for it will be very grievous. 32 The dream was doubled to Par`oh, because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass. 33 Now therefore let Par`oh look for a discreet and wise man, and set him over the land of Mitzrayim. 34 Let Par`oh do this, and let him appoint overseers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Mitzrayim’s produce in the seven plenteous years. 35 Let them gather all the food of these good years that come, and lay up grain under the hand of Par`oh for food in the cities, and let them keep it. 36 The food will be for a store to the land against the seven years of famine, which will be in the land of Mitzrayim; that the land not perish through the famine.” 37  The thing was good in the eyes of Par`oh, and in the eyes of all his servants. 38 Par`oh said to his servants, “Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the spirit of God?” 39 Par`oh said to Yosef, “Because God has shown you all of this, there is none so discreet and wise as you. 40 You shall be over my house, and according to your word will all my people be ruled. Only in the throne I will be greater than you.” 41 Par`oh said to Yosef, “Behold, I have set you over all the land of Mitzrayim.” 42 Par`oh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it on Yosef’s hand, and arrayed him in robes of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck, 43 and he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had. They cried before him, “Bow the knee!” He set him over all the land of Mitzrayim. 44 Par`oh said to Yosef, “I am Par`oh, and without you shall no man lift up his hand or his foot in all the land of Mitzrayim.” 45 Par`oh called Yosef’s name Tzafenat-Pa`neach; and he gave him Asenat, the daughter of Potiphera Kohen of On as a wife. Yosef went out over the land of Mitzrayim. 46 Yosef was thirty years old when he stood before Par`oh king of Mitzrayim. Yosef went out from the presence of Par`oh, and went throughout all the land of Mitzrayim. 47 In the seven plenteous years the eretz brought forth by handfuls. 48 He gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Mitzrayim, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was round about every city, he laid up in the same. 49 Yosef laid up grain as the sand of the sea, very much, until he stopped counting, for it was without number. 50 To Yosef were born two sons before the year of famine came, whom Asenat, the daughter of Potiphera Kohen of On, bore to him. 51 Yosef called the name of the firstborn Menashsheh, “For,” he said, “God has made me forget all my toil, and all my father’s house.” 52 The name of the second, he called Efrayim: “For God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.” 53 The seven years of plenty, that was in the land of Mitzrayim, came to an end. 54 The seven years of famine began to come, just as Yosef had said. There was famine in all lands, but in all the land of Mitzrayim there was bread. 55 When all the land of Mitzrayim was famished, the people cried to Par`oh for bread, and Par`oh said to all the Mitzrim, “Go to Yosef. What he says to you, do.” 56 The famine was over all the surface of the eretz. Yosef opened all the store-houses, and sold to the Mitzrim. The famine was severe in the land of Mitzrayim. 57 All countries came into Mitzrayim, to Yosef, to buy grain, because the famine was severe in all the eretz.

42:1 Now Ya`akov saw that there was grain in Mitzrayim, and Ya`akov said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?” 2 He said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Mitzrayim. Go down there, and buy for us from there, so that we may live, and not die.” 3 Yosef’s ten brothers went down to buy grain from Mitzrayim. 4 But Ya`akov didn’t send Binyamin, Yosef’s brother, with his brothers; for he said, “Lest perhaps harm befall him.” 5 The sons of Yisra’el came to buy among those who came, for the famine was in the land of Kana`an. 6 Yosef was the governor over the land. It was he who sold to all the people of the land. Yosef’s brothers came, and bowed themselves down to him with their faces to the eretz. 7 Yosef saw his brothers, and he recognized them, but acted like a stranger to them, and spoke roughly with them. He said to them, “Where did you come from?” They said, “From the land of Kana`an to buy food.” 8 Yosef recognized his brothers, but they didn’t recognize him. 9 Yosef remembered the dreams which he dreamed about them, and said to them, “You are spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land.” 10 They said to him, “No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food. 11 We are all one man’s sons; we are honest men. Your servants are not spies.” 12 He said to them, “No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land.” 13 They said, “We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Kana`an; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is no more.” 14 Yosef said to them, “It is like I told you, saying, ‘You are spies.’ 15 Hereby you shall be tested. By the life of Par`oh you shall not go forth from here, unless your youngest brother come here. 16 Send one of you, and let him get your brother, and you shall be bound, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you, or else by the life of Par`oh surely you are spies.” 17 He put them all together into custody three days.

NEW TESTAMENT:  MATTHEW 13:24 – 46

13:24 He set another parable before them, saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field,

25 but while people slept, his enemy came and sowed darnel also among the wheat, and went away.

26 But when the blade sprang up and brought forth fruit, then the darnel appeared also.

27 The servants of the householder came and said to him, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where did this darnel come from?’

28 “He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and gather them up?’

29 “But he said, ‘No, lest perhaps while you gather up the darnel, you root up the wheat with them.

30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and in the harvest time I will tell the reapers, “First, gather up the darnel, and bind them in bundles to burn them; but gather the wheat into my barn.”‘”

31 He set another parable before them, saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field;

32 which indeed is smaller than all seeds. But when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches.”

33 He spoke another parable to them. “The Kingdom of Heaven is like yeast, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, until it was all leavened.”

34 Yeshua spoke all these things in parables to the multitudes; and without a parable, he didn’t speak to them,

35 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, “I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world.”

36 Then Yeshua sent the multitudes away, and went into the house. His talmidim came to him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the darnel of the field.”

37 He answered them, “He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man,

38 the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; and the darnel are the sons of the evil one.

39 The enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels.

40 As therefore the darnel is gathered up and burned with fire; so will it be in the end of this age.

41 The Son of Man will send forth his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all things that cause stumbling, and those who do iniquity,

42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

43 Then the righteous will shine forth like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

44 “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found, and hid. In his joy, he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.

45 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who is a merchant seeking fine pearls,

46 who having found one pearl of great price, he went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

OCTOBER 30

PSALMS: 30, 60, 90, 120, 150

PROVERBS: 30

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 39:1 – 41:16

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 12:46 – 13:23

PSALMS: 30

1 I will extol you, LORD, for you have raised me up,
And have not made my foes to rejoice over me.
2 LORD my God, I cried to you, and you have healed me.
3 LORD, you have brought up my soul from She’ol.
You have kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.
4 Sing praise to the LORD, you holy ones of his.
Give thanks to his holy name.
5 For his anger is but for a moment;
His favor is for a lifetime.
Weeping may stay for the night,
But joy comes in the morning.
6 As for me, I said in my prosperity, “I shall never be moved.”
7 You, LORD, when you favored me, made my mountain to stand strong.
But when you hid your face, I was troubled.
8 I cried to you, LORD.
To the LORD I made supplication:
9 “What profit is there in my destruction, if I go down to the pit?
Shall the dust praise you?
Shall it declare your truth?
10 Hear, LORD, and have mercy on me. LORD, be my helper.”
11 You have turned my mourning into dancing for me.
You have removed my sackcloth, and clothed me with gladness,
12 To the end that my heart may sing praise to you, and not be silent.
LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever.

PSALMS: 60

1 God, you have rejected us.
You have broken us down.
You have been angry.
Restore us to you, again.
2 You have made the land tremble.
You have torn it.
Mend its fractures,
For it quakes.
3 You have shown your people hard things.
You have made us drink the wine that makes us stagger.
4 You have given a banner to those who fear you,
That it may be displayed because of the truth.
Selah.
5 So that your beloved may be delivered,
Save with your right hand, and answer us.
6 God has spoken from his sanctuary:
“I will triumph.
I will divide Shekhem,
And measure out the valley of Sukkot.
7 Gil`ad is mine, and Menashsheh is mine.
Efrayim also is the defense of my head.
Yehudah is my scepter.
8 Mo’av is my wash basin.
I will throw my shoe on Edom.
I shout in triumph over Peleshet.”
9 Who will bring me into the strong city?
Who has led me to Edom?
10 Haven’t you, God, rejected us?
You don’t go out with our armies, God.
11 Give us help against the adversary,
For the help of man is vain.
12 Through God we shall do valiantly,
For it is he who will tread down our adversaries.

PSALMS: 90

1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place In all generations.
2 Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever you had formed the eretz and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.
3 You turn man to destruction, saying,
“Return, you children of men.”
4 For a thousand years in your sight
Are but as yesterday when it is past,
As a watch in the night.
5 You sweep them away as they sleep.
In the morning they sprout like new grass.
6 In the morning it sprouts and springs up.
By evening, it is withered and dry.
7 For we are consumed in your anger.
We are troubled in your wrath.
8 You have set our iniquities before you,
Our secret sins in the light of your presence.
9 For all our days have passed away in your wrath.
We bring our years to an end as a sigh.
10 The days of our years are seventy,
Or even by reason of strength eighty years;
Yet their pride is but labor and sorrow,
For it passes quickly, and we fly away.
11 Who knows the power of your anger,
Your wrath according to the fear that is due to you?
12 So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.
13 Relent, LORD! How long?
Have compassion on your servants.
14 Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness,
That we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,
For as many years as we have seen evil.
16 Let your work appear to your servants;
Your glory to their children.
17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us;
Establish the work of our hands for us;
Yes, establish the work of our hands.

PSALMS: 120

1 The LORD says to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
Until I make your enemies your footstool for your feet.”
2 The LORD will send forth the rod of your strength out of Tziyon.
Rule in the midst of your enemies.
3 Your people offer themselves willingly in the day of your power,
In holy array.
Out of the womb of the morning,
you have the dew of your youth.
4 The LORD has sworn, and will not change his mind:
“You are a Kohen forever in the order of Malki-Tzedek.”
5 The Lord is at your right hand.
He will crush kings in the day of his wrath.
6 He will judge among the nations.
He will heap up dead bodies.
He will crush the ruler of the whole eretz.
7 He will drink of the brook in the way;
Therefore will he lift up his head.

PSALMS: 150

1 Deliver me, LORD, from the evil man.
Preserve me from the violent man;
2 Those who devise mischief in their hearts.
They continually gather themselves together for war.
3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent.
Viper’s poison is under their lips. Selah.
4 LORD, keep me from the hands of the wicked.
Preserve me from the violent men:
Who have determined to trip my feet.
5 The proud have hidden a snare for me,
They have spread the cords of a net by the path.
They have set traps for me. Selah.
6 I said to the LORD, “You are my God.”
Listen to the cry of my petitions, LORD.
7 LORD, the Lord, the strength of my yeshu`ah,
You have covered my head in the day of battle.
8 LORD, don’t grant the desires of the wicked.
Don’t let their evil plans succeed,
or they will become proud.
Selah.
9 As for the head of those who surround me,
Let the mischief of their own lips cover them.
10 Let burning coals fall on them.
Let them be thrown into the fire,
Into miry pits, from where they never rise.
11 An evil speaker won’t be established in the eretz.
Evil will hunt the violent man to overthrow him.
12 I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted,
And justice for the needy.
13 Surely the righteous will give thanks to your name.
The upright will dwell in your presence.

PROVERBS: 30

1 The words of Agur the son of Yakeh, the oracle:
The man says to ‘Iti’el, To ‘Iti’el and Ucal:
2 “Surely I am the most ignorant man,
And don’t have a man’s understanding.
3 I have not learned wisdom,
Neither do I have the knowledge of the Holy One.
4 Who has ascended up into heaven, and descended?
Who has gathered the wind in his fists?
Who has bound the waters in his garment?
Who has established all the ends of the eretz? ‘
What is his name, and what is his son’s name, if you know?
5 “Every word of God is flawless.
He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
6 Don’t you add to his words,
Lest he reprove you, and you be found a liar.
7 “Two things I have asked of you;
Don’t deny me before I die:
8 Remove far from me falsehood and lies.
Give me neither poverty nor riches.
Feed me with the food that is needful for me;
9 Lest I be full, deny you, and say,
‘Who is the LORD?’
Or lest I be poor, and steal,
And so dishonor the name of my God.
10 “Don’t slander a servant to his master,
Lest he curse you, and you be held guilty.
11 There is a generation that curses their father,
And doesn’t bless their mother.
12 There is a generation that is pure in their own eyes,
Yet are not washed from their filthiness.
13 There is a generation, oh how lofty are their eyes!
Their eyelids are lifted up.
14 There is a generation whose teeth are like swords,
And their jaws like knives,
To devour the poor from the eretz,
and the needy from among men.
15 “The leach has two daughters:
‘Give, give.’
“There are three things that are never satisfied;
Four that don’t say, ‘Enough:’
16 She’ol, the barren womb;
The eretz that is not satisfied with water;
The fire that doesn’t say, ‘Enough;’
17 And the eye that mocks at his father,
And scorns obedience to his mother:
The ravens of the valley shall pick it out,
The young eagles shall eat it.
18 “There are three things which are too amazing for me,
Four which I don’t understand:
19 The way of an eagle in the air;
The way of a serpent on a rock;
The way of a ship in the midst of the sea;
And the way of a man with a maiden.
20 So is the way of an adulterous woman:
She eats and wipes her mouth,
And says, ‘I have done nothing wrong.’
21 “For three things the eretz tremble,
And under four, it can’t bear up:
22 For a servant when he is king;
A fool when he is filled with food;
23 For an unloved woman when she is married;
And a handmaid who is heir to her mistress.
24 “There are four things which are little on the eretz,
But they are exceeding wise:
25 The ants are not a strong people,
Yet they provide their food in the summer;
26 The conies are but a feeble folk,
Yet make they their houses in the rocks;
27 The locusts have no king,
Yet they advance in ranks;
28 You can catch a lizard with your hands,
Yet she is in kings’ palaces.
29 “There are three things which are stately in their march,
Four which are stately in going:
30 The lion, which is mightiest among animals,
And doesn’t turn away for any;
31 The greyhound, the male goat also;
And the king against whom there is no rising up.
32 “If you have done foolishly in lifting up yourself,
Or if you have thought evil,
Put your hand over your mouth.
33 For as the churning of milk brings forth butter,
And the wringing of the nose brings forth blood;
So the forcing of wrath brings forth strife.”

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 39:1 – 41:16

39:1 Yosef was brought down to Mitzrayim. Potifar, an officer of Paroh's, the captain of the guard, a Mitzrian, bought him from the hand of the Yishmeelim that had brought him down there. 2 The LORD was with Yosef, and he was a prosperous man. He was in the house of his master the Mitzrian. 3 His master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did prosper in his hand. 4 Yosef found favor in his sight. He ministered to him, and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand. 5 It happened from the time that he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Mitzrian’s house for Yosef’s sake; and the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had, in the house and in the field. 6 He left all that he had in Yosef’s hand. He didn’t concern himself with anything, except for the food which he ate. Yosef was well-built and handsome. 7 It happened after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes on Yosef; and she said, “Lie with me.” 8 But he refused, and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, my master doesn’t know what is with me in the house, and he has put all that he has into my hand. 9 He isn’t greater in this house than I, neither has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” 10 It happened that as she spoke to Yosef day by day, that he didn’t listen to her, to lie by her, or to be with her. 11 It happened about this time, that he went into the house to do his work, and there were none of the men of the house inside. 12 She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” He left his garment in her hand, and ran outside. 13 It happened, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and had run outside, 14 that she called to the men of her house, and spoke to them, saying, “Behold, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice. 15 It happened, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment by me, and ran outside.” 16 She laid up his garment by her, until his master came home. 17 She spoke to him according to these words, saying, “The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought to us, came in to me to mock me, 18 and it happened, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment by me, and ran outside.” 19 It happened, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, “This is what your servant did to me,” that his wrath was kindled. 20 Yosef’s master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were bound, and he was there in the custody. 21 But the LORD was with Yosef, and showed kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 22 The keeper of the prison committed to Yosef’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever they did there, he was the doer of it. 23 The keeper of the prison didn’t look after anything that was under his hand, because the LORD was with him; and that which he did, the LORD made it prosper.

40:1 It happened after these things, that the butler of the king of Mitzrayim and his baker offended their lord, the king of Mitzrayim. 2 Paroh was angry against his two officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers.

3 He put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Yosef was bound.

4 The captain of the guard assigned them to Yosef, and he took care of them. They stayed in prison many days.

5 They both dreamed a dream, each man his dream, in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Mitzrayim, who were bound in the prison.

6 Yosef came in to them in the morning, and saw them, and, saw that they were sad.

7 He asked Paroh’s officers who were with him in custody in his master’s house, saying, “Why do you look so sad today?” 8 They said to him, “We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it.” Yosef said to them, “Don’t interpretations belong to God? Please tell it to me.”9 The chief butler told his dream to Yosef, and said to him, “In my dream, behold, a vine was in front of me, 10 and in the vine were three branches. It was as though it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and the clusters of it brought forth ripe grapes. 11 Paroh's cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Paroh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Paroh's hand."

12 Yosef said to him, "This is the interpretation of it: the three branches are three days

13 Within three more days, Paroh will lift up your head, and restore you to your office. You will give Paroh's cup into his hand, the way you did when you were his butler.

14 But remember me when it will be well with you, and show kindness, please, to me, and make mention of me to Paroh, and bring me out of this house. 15 For indeed, I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews, and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.” 16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Yosef, “I also was in my dream, and, behold, three baskets of white bread were on my head. 17 In the uppermost basket there was of all kinds of baked food for Paroh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head."18 Yosef answered, "This is the interpretation of it. The three baskets are three days. 19 Within three more days, Paroh will lift up your head from off you, and will hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from off you.” 20 It happened the third day, which was Paroh's birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants, and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and the head of the chief baker among his servants.

21 He restored the chief butler to his butlership again, and he gave the cup into Paroh’s hand; 22 but he hanged the chief baker, as Yosef had interpreted to them. 23 Yet the chief butler didn’t remember Yosef, but forgot him.

41:1 It happened at the end of two full years, that Paroh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river. 2 Behold, there came up out of the river seven cattle, well-favored and fat-fleshed, and they fed in the reed-grass.

3 Behold, seven other cattle came up after them out of the river, ill-favored and lean-fleshed, and stood by the other cattle on the brink of the river.

4 The ill-favored and lean-fleshed cattle ate up the seven well-favored and fat cattle. So Paroh awoke. 5 He slept and dreamed a second time: and, behold, seven ears of grain came up on one stalk, rank and good. 6 Behold, seven ears, thin and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them. 7 The thin ears swallowed up the seven rank and full ears. Paroh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream.

8 It happened in the morning that his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all the magicians of Mitzrayim, and all the wise men of it. Paroh told them his dream, but there was no one who could interpret them to Paroh.

9 hen the chief butler spoke to Paroh, saying, “I remember my faults today. 10 Paroh was angry with his servants, and put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, me and the chief baker.

11 We dreamed a dream in one night, I and he. We dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream.

12 There was with us there a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard, and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams. To each man according to his dream he did interpret.

13 It happened, as he interpreted to us, so it was: me he restored to my office, and him he hanged."

14 Then Paroh sent and called Yosef, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon. He shaved himself, changed his clothing, and came in to Paroh.

15 Paroh said to Yosef, “I have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard it said of you, that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” 16 Yosef answered Paroh, saying, "It isn't in me: God will give Paroh an answer of shalom.”

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 12:46 – 13:23

12:46 While he was yet speaking to the multitudes, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, seeking to speak to him. 47 One said to him, “Behold, your mother and your brothers stand outside, seeking to speak to you.” 48 But he answered him who told him, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” 49 He stretched forth his hand towards his talmidim, and said, “Behold, my mother and my brothers! 50 For whoever will do the will of my Father who is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

13:1 On that day Yeshua went out of the house, and sat by the seaside. 2 Great multitudes gathered to him, so that he entered into a boat, and sat, and all the multitude stood on the beach. 3 He spoke to them many things in parables, saying, “Behold, a farmer went forth to sow. 4 As he sowed, some seeds fell by the roadside, and the birds came and devoured them. 5 Others fell on rocky ground, where they didn’t have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of eretz. 6 When the sun had risen, they were scorched. Because they had no root, they withered away.
7  Others fell on thorns. The thorns grew up and choked them: 8 and others fell on good soil, and yielded fruit: some one hundred times, some sixty, and some thirty. 9 He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” 10 The talmidim came, and said to him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” 11 He answered them, “To you it is given to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but it is not given to them. 12 For whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have abundance, but whoever doesn’t have, from him will be taken away even that which he has. 13 Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they don’t see, and hearing, they don’t hear, neither do they understand. 14 In them the prophecy of Yesha`yahu is fulfilled, which says, ‘By hearing you will hear, And will in no way understand; Seeing you will see, And will in no way perceive: 15 For this people’s heart has grown callous, Their ears are dull of hearing, Their eyes they have closed; Or else perhaps they might perceive with their eyes, Hear with their ears, Understand with their heart, And should turn again; And I would heal them.’ 16 “But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear. 17 For most assuredly I tell you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see the things which you see, and didn’t see them; and to hear the things which you hear, and didn’t hear them. 18 “Hear, then, the parable of the farmer. 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and doesn’t understand it, the evil one comes, and snatches away that which has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown by the roadside. 20 What was sown on the rocky places, this is he who hears the word, and immediately with joy receives it; 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while. When oppression or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. 22 What was sown among the thorns, this is he who hears the word, but the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. 23 What was sown on the good ground, this is he who hears the word, and understands it, who most assuredly bears fruit, and brings forth, some one hundred times, some sixty, some thirty.”
