NOVEMBER 1

PSALMS: 1, 31, 61, 91, 121

PROVERBS: 1

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 42:18 – 43:34

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 13:47 – 14:12

PSALMS: 1

1 How blessed are those who reject the advice of the wicked,
don’t stand on the way of sinners or sit where scoffers sit!
2 Their delight is in ADONAI’s Torah;
on his Torah they meditate day and night.
3 They are like trees planted by streams -they bear their fruit in season,
their leaves never wither, everything they do succeeds.
4 Not so the wicked, who are like chaff driven by the wind.
5 For this reason the wicked won’t stand up to the judgment,
nor will sinners at the gathering of the righteous.
6 For ADONAI watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked is doomed.

PSALMS: 31

1 For the leader.
A psalm of David:
In you, ADONAI, I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame;
in your justice, save me!
2 Turn your ear toward me, come quickly to my rescue,
be for me a rock of strength, a fortress to keep me safe.
3 Since you are my rock and fortress, lead me and guide me for your name’s sake.
4 Free me from the net they have hidden to catch me, because you are my strength.
5 Into your hand I commit my spirit;
you will redeem me, ADONAI, God of truth.
6 I hate those who serve worthless idols;
as for me, I trust in ADONAI.
7  I will rejoice and be glad in your grace,
for you see my affliction,
you know how distressed I am.
8 You did not hand me over to the enemy;
you set my feet where I can move freely.
9 Show me favor, ADONAI, for I am in trouble.
My eyes grow dim with anger, my soul and body as well.
10 For my life is worn out with sorrow and my years with sighing;
my strength gives out under my guilt, and my bones are wasting away.
11 I am scorned by all my adversaries, and even more by my neighbors;
even to acquaintances I am an object of fear when they see me in the street,
they turn away from me.
12 Like a dead man, I have passed from their minds;
I have become like a broken pot.
13 All I hear is whispering, terror is all around me;
they plot together against me, scheming to take my life.
14 But I, I trust in you, ADONAI; I say, “You are my God.”
15 My times are in your hand;
rescue me from my enemies’ power, from those who persecute me.
16 Make your face shine on your servant;
in your grace, save me.
17 ADONAI, don’t let me be put to shame,
for I have called on you;
let the wicked be put to shame, l
et them be silenced in Sh’ol.
18 May lying lips be struck dumb,
that speak insolently against the righteous with such pride and contempt.
19 But oh, how great is your goodness,
which you have stored up for those who fear you,
which you do for those who take refuge in you, before people’s very eyes!
20 In the shelter of your presence you hide them from human plots,
you conceal them in your shelter, safe from contentious tongues.
21 Blessed be ADONAI!
For he has shown me his amazing grace when I was in a city under siege.
22 As for me, in my alarm I said, “I have been cut off from your sight!
“Nevertheless, you heard my pleas when I cried out to you.
23 Love ADONAI, you faithful of his.
ADONAI preserves the loyal, but the proud he repays in full.
24 Be strong, and fill your hearts with courage,
all of you who hope in ADONAI.

PSALMS: 91

1 You who live in the shelter of ‘Elyon,
who spend your nights in the shadow of Shaddai,
2 who say to ADONAI,
“My refuge!
My fortress!
My God, in whom I trust!”
3 he will rescue you from the trap of the hunter and from the plague of calamities;
4 he will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his truth is a shield and protection.
5 You will not fear the terrors of night or the arrow that flies by day,
6 or the plague that roams in the dark,
or the scourge that wreaks havoc at noon.
7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand;
but it won’t come near you.
8 Only keep your eyes open, and you will see how the wicked are punished.
9 For you have made ADONAI, the Most High,
who is my refuge, your dwelling-place.
10 No disaster will happen to you,
no calamity will come near your tent;
11 for he will order his angels to care for you and guard you wherever you go.
12 They will carry you in their hands,
so that you won’t trip on a stone.
13 You will tread down lions and snakes,
young lions and serpents you will trample underfoot.
14 “Because he loves me, I will rescue him;
because he knows my name, I will protect him.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him.
I will be with him when he is in trouble.
I will extricate him and bring him honor.
16 I will satisfy him with long life and show him my salvation.”

PSALMS: 121

1 A song of ascents:
If I raise my eyes to the hills,
from where will my help come?
2 My help comes from ADONAI,
the maker of heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot slip -your guardian is not asleep.
4 No, the guardian of Isra’el never slumbers or sleeps.
5 ADONAI is your guardian; at your right hand
ADONAI provides you with shade
6 the sun can’t strike you during the day or even the moon at night.
7 ADONAI will guard you against all harm;
he will guard your life.
8 ADONAI will guard your coming and going from now on and forever.

PROVERBS: 1

1 The proverbs of Shlomo the son of David, king of Isra’el,
2 are for learning about wisdom and discipline; f
or understanding words expressing deep insight;
3 for gaining an intelligently disciplined life,
doing what is right, just and fair;
4 for endowing with caution those who don’t think and the
young person with knowledge and discretion.
5 Someone who is already wise will hear and learn still more;
someone who already understands will gain the ability to counsel well;
6 he will understand proverbs, obscure expressions,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.
7 The fear of ADONAI is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
8 My son, heed the discipline of your father,
and do not abandon the teaching of your mother;
9 they will be a garland to grace your head,
a medal of honor for your neck.
10 My son, if sinners entice you,
don’t go along with them.
11 Suppose they say, “Come with us:
we’ll ambush somebody and kill him,
we’ll waylay some harmless soul, just for fun;
12 we’ll swallow him alive, like Sh’ol, whole,
like those who descend to the pit;
13 we’ll find everything he has of value,
we’ll fill our homes with loot!
14 Throw in your lot with us;
we’ll share a common purse”-
15 my son, don’t go along with them,
don’t set foot on their path;
16 Their feet run to evil, they rush to shed blood.
17 For in vain is the net baited if any bird can see it;
18 rather, they are ambushing themselves
to shed their own blood, waylaying themselves.
19 So are the ways of all greedy for gain -it takes the lives of those who get it.
20 Wisdom calls aloud in the open air and raises her voice in the public places;
21 she calls out at streetcorners and speaks out at entrances to city gates:
22 “How long, you whose lives have no purpose,
will you love thoughtless living?
How long will scorners find pleasure in mocking?
How long will fools hate knowledge?
23 Repent when I reprove -I will pour out my spirit to you,
I will make my words known to you.
24 Because you refused when I called,
and no one paid attention when I put out my hand,
25 but instead you neglected my counsel and would not accept my reproof;
26 I, in turn, will laugh at your distress,
and mock when terror comes over you
27 yes, when terror overtakes you like a storm and your disaster approaches like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble assail you.
28 Then they will call me, but I won’t answer;
they will seek me earnestly, but they won’t find me.
29 Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of ADONAI,
30 they refused my counsel and despised my reproof.
31 So they will bear the consequences of their own way
and be overfilled with their own schemes.
32 For the aimless wandering of the thoughtless will kill them,
and the smug overconfidence of fools will destroy them;
33 but those who pay attention to me will live securely,
untroubled by fear of misfortune.”

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 42:18 – 43:34

42:18 Yosef said to them the third day, “Do this, and live, for I fear God. 19 If you are honest men, then let one of your brothers be bound in your prison-house; but you go, carry grain for the famine of your houses. 20 Bring your youngest brother to me; so will your words be verified, and you won’t die.” They did so. 21 They said one to another, “We are most assuredly guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us, and we wouldn’t listen. Therefore this distress has come on us.” 22 Re’uven answered them, saying, “Didn’t I tell you, saying, ‘Don’t sin against the child,’ and you wouldn’t listen? Therefore also, behold, his blood is required.” 23 They didn’t know that Yosef understood them; for there was an interpreter between them. 24 He turned himself about from them, and wept, and he returned to them, and spoke to them, and took Shimon from among them, and bound him before their eyes.

25 Then Yosef commanded to fill their vessels with grain, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provisions for the way. Thus was it done to them

26 They loaded their donkeys with their grain, and departed from there.

27 As one of them opened his sack to give his donkey food in the lodging-place, he saw his money. Behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.

28 He said to his brothers, "My money is restored! Behold, it is even in my sack." Their hearts failed them, and they turned trembling one to another, saying, "What is this that God has done to us?"

29 They came to Yaakov their father to the land of Kanaan, and told him all that had befallen them, saying,

30 "The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly with us, and took us for spies of the country. 31 We said to him, 'We are honest men. We are no spies.

32 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Kanaan.’ 33 The man, the lord of the land, said to us, ‘Hereby will I know that you are honest men. Leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for the famine of your houses, and go your way. 34 Bring your youngest brother to me. Then will I know that you are not spies, but that you are honest men. So will I deliver you your brother, and you shall trade in the land.'” 35 It happened as they emptied their sacks, that behold, every man’s bundle of money was in his sack. When they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid. 36 Yaakov, their father, said to them, "You have bereaved me of my children! Yosef is no more, Shimon is no more, and you want to take Binyamin away. All these things are against me.” 37 Re’uven spoke to his father, saying, “Kill my two sons, if I don’t bring him to you. Deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to you again.” 38 He said, “My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left. If harm befall him by the way in which you go, then you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to She’ol.”

43:1 The famine was severe in the land. 2 It happened, when they had eaten up the grain which they had brought out of Mitzrayim, their father said to them, “Go again, buy us a little food.” 3 Yehudah spoke to him, saying, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’ 4 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food, 5 but if you will not send him, we will not go down, for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.'” 6 Yisra’el said, “Why did you treat me so badly, telling the man that you had another brother?” 7 They said, “The man asked directly concerning ourselves, and concerning our relatives, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?’ We just answered his questions. Is there any way we could know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down?'” 8 Yehudah said to Yisra’el, his father, “Send the boy with me, and we will arise and go, so that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones. 9 I will be collateral for him. From my hand will you require him. If I don’t bring him to you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever, 10 for unless we had lingered, surely we would have returned a second time by now.” 11 Their father, Yisra’el, said to them, “If it be so now, do this. Take from the choice fruits of the land in your vessels, and carry down a present for the man, a little balm, a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts, and almonds; 12 and take double money in your hand, with the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks carry again in your hand. Perhaps it was an oversight. 13 Take also your brother, and arise, go again to the man. 14 May El Shaddai give you mercy before the man, that he may release to you your other brother and Binyamin. If I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.” 15 The men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Binyamin; and rose up, went down to Mitzrayim, and stood before Yosef. 16 When Yosef saw Binyamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and butcher an animal, and make ready; for the men will dine with me at noon.” 17  The man did as Yosef commanded, and the man brought the men to Yosef’s house. 18 The men were afraid, because they were brought to Yosef’s house; and they said, “Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall on us, and take us for bondservants, along with our donkeys.” 19 They came near to the steward of Yosef’s house, and they spoke to him at the door of the house, 20 and said, “Oh, my lord, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food: 21 and it happened, when we came to the lodging-place, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. We have brought it again in our hand.
22 Other money have we brought down in our hand to buy food. We don’t know who put our money in our sacks.” 23 He said, “Shalom be to you. Don’t be afraid. Your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks. I received your money.” He brought Shim`on out to them. 24 The man brought the men into Yosef’s house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet. He gave their donkeys provender. 25 They made ready the present for Yosef’s coming at noon, for they heard that they should eat bread there. 26 When Yosef came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed down themselves to him to the eretz. 27  He asked them of their welfare, and said, “Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he yet alive?” 28 They said, “Your servant, our father, is well. He is still alive.” They bowed the head, and did homage. 29 He lifted up his eyes, and saw Binyamin, his brother, his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me?” He said, “God be gracious to you, my son.” 30 Yosef made haste; for his heart yearned over his brother: and he sought a place to weep; and he entered into his room, and wept there. 31 He washed his face, and came out. He controlled himself, and said, “Serve the meal.” 32 They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Mitzrim, that ate with him, by themselves, because the Mitzrim don’t eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Mitzrim. 33 They sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth, and the men marveled one with another. 34 He sent portions to them from before him, but Binyamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. They drank, and were merry with him.

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 13:47 – 14:12

13:47 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a dragnet, that was cast into the sea, and gathered some fish of every kind, 48 which, when it was filled, they drew up on the beach. They sat down, and gathered the good into containers, but the bad they threw away. 49 So will it be in the end of the world. The angels will come forth, and separate the wicked from among the righteous, 50 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.” 51 Yeshua said to them, “Have you understood all these things?” They answered him, “Yes, Lord.” 52 He said to them, “Therefore, every Sofer who has been made a talmid to the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who is a householder, who brings forth out of his treasure new and old things.” 53 It happened that when Yeshua had finished these parables, he departed from there. 54 Coming into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, so much that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom, and these mighty works? 55 Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother called Miryam, and his brothers, Yaakov, Yosi, Shimon, and Yehudah? 56 Aren’t all of his sisters with us? Where, then did this man get all of these things?” 57 They were offended by him. But Yeshua said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and in his own house.” 58 He didn’t do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

14:1 At that time, Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Yeshua, 2 and said to his servants, “This is Yochanan the immerser. He is risen from the dead. That is why these powers work in him.” 3 For Herod had laid hold of Yochanan, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Pilipos’s wife. 4 For Yochanan said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5 When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. 6 But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod. 7 Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask. 8 She, being put forward by her mother, said, “Give me here on a platter the head of Yochanan the immerser.” 9 The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oaths, and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded it to be given, 10and he sent and beheaded Yochanan in the prison. 11 His head was brought on a platter, and given to the young lady: and she brought it to her mother. 12 His talmidim came, and took up the body, and buried it; and they went and told Yeshua.

MAY 19

PSALMS:  19, 49, 79, 109, 139

PROVERBS:  19

OLD TESTAMENT:  EZRA 7:1 – 8:20

NEW TESTAMENT:  1 CORINTHIANS 4:1 – 23

PSALMS:  19

1 The heavens declare the glory of God.

The expanse shows his handiwork.

2 Day after day they pour forth speech,

And night after night they display knowledge.

3 There is no speech nor language,

Where their voice is not heard.

4 Their voice has gone out through all the eretz,

Their words to the end of the world.

In them he has set a tent for the sun,

5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,

Like a strong man rejoicing to run his course.

6 His going forth is from the end of the heavens,

His circuit to the ends of it;

There is nothing hid from the heat of it.

7 The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul.

The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

8 The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart.

The mitzvah of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever.

The ordinances of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold, yes, than much fine gold;

Sweeter also than honey and the extract of the honeycomb.

11 Moreover by them is your servant warned.

In keeping them there is great reward.

12 Who can discern his errors?

Forgive me from hidden errors.

13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins.

Let them not have dominion over me.

Then I will be upright,

I will be blameless and innocent of great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart

Be acceptable in your sight, LORD, my rock, and my redeemer.

PSALMS:  49

1 Hear this, all you peoples.

Listen, all you inhabitants of the world,

2 Both low and high,

Rich and poor together.

3 My mouth will speak words of wisdom.

My heart shall utter understanding.

4 I will incline my ear to a proverb.

I will open my riddle on the harp.

5 Why should I fear in the days of evil,

When iniquity at my heels surrounds me?

6 Those who trust in their wealth,

And boast in the multitude of their riches —

7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother,

Nor give God a ransom for him.

8 For the redemption of their life is costly,

No payment is ever enough,

9 That he should live on forever,

That he should not see corruption.

10 For he sees that wise men die;

Likewise the fool and the senseless perish,

And leave their wealth to others.

11 Their inward thought is, that their houses will endure forever,

And their dwelling places to all generations.

They name their lands after themselves.

12 But man, despite his riches, doesn’t endure.

He is like the animals that perish.

13 This is the destiny of those who are foolish,

And of those who approve their sayings. Selah.

14 They are appointed as a flock for She’ol.

Death shall be their shepherd.

The upright shall have dominion over them in the morning.

Their beauty shall decay in She’ol,

Far from their mansion.

15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of She’ol,

For he will receive me.

Selah.

16 Don’t be afraid when a man is made rich,

When the glory of his house is increased.

17 For when he dies he shall carry nothing away.

His glory shall not descend after him.

18 Though while he lived he blessed his soul —

And men praise you when you do well for yourself —

19 He shall go to the generation of his fathers.

They shall never see the light.

20 A man who has riches without understanding,

Is like the animals that perish.

PSALMS:  79

1 God, the nations have come into your inheritance.

They have defiled your holy temple.

They have laid Yerushalayim in heaps.

2 They have given the dead bodies of your servants to be food for the birds of the sky, The flesh of your holy ones to the animals of the eretz.

3 Their blood they have shed like water around Yerushalayim.

There was no one to bury them.

4 We have become a reproach to our neighbors,

A scoffing and derision to those who are around us.

5 How long, LORD? Will you be angry forever?

Will your jealousy burn like fire?

6 Pour out your wrath on the nations that don’t know you;

On the kingdoms that don’t call on your names;

7 For they have devoured Ya`akov,

And destroyed his homeland.

8 Don’t hold the iniquities of our forefathers against us.

Let your tender mercies speedily meet us,

For we are in desperate need.

9 Help us, God of our salvation, for the glory of your name.

Deliver us, and forgive our sins, for your name’s sake.

10 Why should the nations say,

“Where is their God?”

Let it be known among the nations, before our eyes,

That vengeance for your servants’ blood is being poured out.

11 Let the sighing of the prisoner come before you.

According to the greatness of your power, preserve those who are sentenced to death;

12 Pay back to our neighbors seven times into their bosom

Their reproach with which they have reproached you, Lord.

13 So we, your people and sheep of your pasture,

Will give you thanks forever.

We will praise you forever, to all generations.

PSALMS:  109

1 God of my praise, don’t remain silent,

2 For they have opened the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of deceit against me. They have spoken to me with a lying tongue.

3 They have also surrounded me with words of hatred,

And fought against me without a cause.

4 In return for my love, they are my adversaries;

But I am in prayer.

5 They have rewarded me evil for good,

And hatred for my love.

6 Set a wicked man over him.

Let an adversary stand at his right hand.

7  When he is judged, let him come forth guilty.

Let his prayer be turned into sin.

8 Let his days be few. Let another take his office.

9 Let his children be fatherless,

And his wife a widow.

10 Let his children be wandering beggars.

Let them be sought from their ruins.

11 Let the creditor seize all that he has.

Let strangers plunder the fruit of his labor.

12 Let there be none to extend kindness to him,

Neither let there be any to have pity on his fatherless children.

13 Let his posterity be cut off.

In the generation following let their name be blotted out.

14 Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered by the LORD.

Don’t let the sin of his mother be blotted out.

15 Let them be before the LORD continually,

That he may cut off the memory of them from the eretz;

16 Because he didn’t remember to show kindness,

But persecuted the poor and needy man,

The broken in heart, to kill them.

17  Yes, he loved cursing, and it came to him.

He didn’t delight in blessing, and it was far from him.

18 He clothed himself also with cursing as with his garment.

It came into his inward parts like water,

Like oil into his bones.

19 Let it be to him as the clothing with which he covers himself,

For the belt that is always around him.

20 This is the reward of my adversaries from the LORD,

Of those who speak evil against my soul.

21 But deal with me, the LORD the Lord, for your name’s sake,

Because your loving kindness is good, deliver me;

22 For I am poor and needy.

My heart is wounded within me.

23 I fade away like an evening shadow.

I am shaken off as the arbeh.

24 My knees are weak through fasting.

My body is thin and lacks fat.

25 I have also become a reproach to them.

When they see me, they shake their head.

26 Help me, LORD, my God.

Save me according to your loving kindness;

27  That they may know that this is your hand;

That you, LORD, have done it.

28 They may curse, but you bless.

When they arise, they will be put to shame,

But your servant shall rejoice.

29 Let my adversaries be clothed with dishonor.

Let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

30 I will give great thanks to the LORD with my mouth.

Yes, I will praise him among the multitude.

31 For he will stand at the right hand of the needy,

To save him from those who judge his soul.

PSALMS:  139

1 LORD, you have searched me,

And you know me.

2 You know my sitting down and my rising up.

You perceive my thoughts from afar.

3 You search out my path and my lying down,

And are acquainted with all my ways.

4 For there is not a word on my tongue,

But, behold, LORD, you know it altogether.

5 You tzitzit me in behind and before.

You laid your hand on me.

6 This knowledge is beyond me.

It is lofty. I can’t attain it.

7 Where could I go from your Spirit?

Or where could I flee from your presence?

8 If I ascend up into heaven, you are there.

If I make my bed in She’ol, behold, you are there!

9 If I take the wings of the dawn,

And settle in the uttermost parts of the sea;

10 Even there your hand will lead me,

And your right hand will hold me.

11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me;

The light around me will be night;”

12 Even the darkness doesn’t hide from you,

But the night shines as the day.

The darkness is like light to you.

13 For you formed my inmost being.

You knit me together in my mother’s womb.

14 I will give thanks to you,

For I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Your works are wonderful.

My soul knows that very well.

15 My frame wasn’t hidden from you,

When I was made in secret,

Woven together in the depths of the eretz.

16 Your eyes saw my body.

In your book they were all written,

The days that were ordained for me,

When as yet there were none of them.

17 How precious to me are your thoughts, God!

How vast is the sum of them!

18 If I would count them, they are more in number than the sand.

When I wake up, I am still with you.

19 If only you, God, would kill the wicked.

Get away from me, you bloodthirsty men!

20 For they speak against you wickedly.

Your enemies take your name in vain.

21 LORD, don’t I hate those who hate you?

Am I not grieved with those who rise up against you?

22 I hate them with perfect hatred.

They have become my enemies.

23 Search me, God, and know my heart.

Try me, and know my thoughts.

24 See if there is any wicked way in me,

And lead me in the everlasting way.

PROVERBS:  19

1 Better is the poor who walks in his integrity

Than he who is perverse in his lips and is a fool.

2 It isn’t good to have zeal without knowledge;

Nor being hasty with one’s feet and missing the way.

3 The foolishness of man subverts his way;

His heart rages against the LORD.

4 Wealth adds many friends,

But the poor is separated from his friend.

5 A false witness shall not be unpunished.

He who pours out lies shall not go free.

6 Many will entreat the favor of a ruler,

And everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts.

7 All the relatives of the poor shun him:

How much more do his friends avoid him!

He pursues them with pleas, but they are gone.

8 He who gets wisdom loves his own soul.

He who keeps understanding shall find good.

9 A false witness shall not be unpunished.

He who utters lies shall perish.

10 Delicate living is not appropriate for a fool,

Much less for a servant to have rule over princes.

11 The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger.

It is his glory to overlook an offense.

12 The king’s wrath is like the roaring of a lion,

But his favor is like dew on the grass.

13 A foolish son is the calamity of his father.

A wife’s quarrels are a continual dripping.

14 House and riches are an inheritance from fathers,

But a prudent wife is from the LORD.

15 Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep.

The idle soul shall suffer hunger.

16 He who keeps the mitzvah keeps his soul,

But he who is contemptuous in his ways shall die.

17 He who has pity on the poor lends to the LORD;

He will reward him.

18 Discipline your son, for there is hope;

Don’t be a willing party to his death.

19 A hot-tempered man must pay the penalty,

For if you rescue him, you must do it again.

20 Listen to counsel and receive instruction, ‘

That you may be wise in your latter end.

21 There are many plans in a man’s heart,

But the LORD’s counsel will prevail.

22 That which makes a man to be desired is his kindness.

A poor man is better than a liar.

23 The fear of the LORD leads to life, then contentment;

He rests and will not be touched by trouble.

24 The sluggard buries his hand in the dish;

He will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

25 Flog a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence;

Rebuke one who has understanding, and he will gain knowledge.

26 He who robs his father and drives away his mother,

Is a son who causes shame and brings reproach.

27 Stop, my son, listening to instruction,

And you will stray from the words of knowledge.

28 A corrupt witness mocks justice,

And the mouth of the wicked gulps down iniquity.

29 Penalties are prepared for scoffers,

And beatings for the backs of fools.

OLD TESTAMENT:  EZRA 7:1 – 8:20

7:1 Now after these things, in the reign of Artachshasta king of Paras, Ezra the son of Serayah, the son of `Azaryah, the son of Hilkiyah, 2 the son of Shallum, the son of Tzadok, the son of Achituv, 3the son of Amaryah, the son of `Azaryah, the son of Merayot, 4 the son of Zerachyah, the son of `Uzzi, the son of Bukki, 5 the son of Avishua, the son of Pinechas, the son of El`azar, the son of Aharon the chief Kohen; 6 this Ezra went up from Bavel: and he was a ready Sofer in the law of Moshe, which the LORD, the God of Yisra’el, had given; and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God on him. 7  There went up some of the children of Yisra’el, and of the Kohanim, and the Levites, and the singers, and the porters, and the temple servants, to Yerushalayim, in the seventh year of Artachshasta the king. 8 He came to Yerushalayim in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king. 9 For on the first [day] of the first month began he to go up from Bavel; and on the first [day] of the fifth month came he to Yerushalayim, according to the good hand of his God on him. 10 For Ezra had set his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Yisra’el statutes and ordinances. 11 Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artachshasta gave to Ezra the Kohen, the Sofer, even the Sofer of the words of the mitzvot of the LORD, and of his statutes to Yisra’el: 12 Artachshasta, king of kings, to Ezra the Kohen, the Sofer of the law of the God of heaven, perfect and so forth. 13 I make a decree, that all those of the people of Yisra’el, and their Kohanim and the Levites, in my realm, who are minded of their own free will to go to Yerushalayim, go with you. 14 Because you are sent of the king and his seven counselors, to inquire concerning Yehudah and Yerushalayim, according to the law of your God which is in your hand, 15 and to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counselors have freely offered to the God of Yisra’el, whose habitation is in Yerushalayim, 16 and all the silver and gold that you shall find in all the province of Bavel, with the freewill-offering of the people, and of the Kohanim, offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Yerushalayim; 17  therefore you shall with all diligence buy with this money bulls, rams, lambs, with their meal-offerings and their drink-offerings, and shall offer them on the altar of the house of your God which is in Yerushalayim. 18 Whatever shall seem good to you and to your brothers to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do you after the will of your God. 19 The vessels that are given you for the service of the house of your God, deliver you before the God of Yerushalayim. 20 Whatever more shall be needful for the house of your God, which you shall have occasion to bestow, bestow it out of the king’s treasure-house. 21 I, even I Artachshasta the king, do make a decree to all the treasurers who are beyond the River, that whatever Ezra the Kohen, the Sofer of the law of the God of heaven, shall require of you, it be done with all diligence, 22 to one hundred talents of silver, and to one hundred measures of wheat, and to one hundred baths of wine, and to one hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribing how much. 23 Whatever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be done exactly for the house of the God of heaven; for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons? 24 Also we inform you, that touching any of the Kohanim and Levites, the singers, porters, temple servants, or servants of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to impose tribute, custom, or toll, on them. 25 You, Ezra, after the wisdom of your God who is in your hand, appoint magistrates and judges, who may judge all the people who are beyond the River, all such as know the laws of your God; and teach you him who doesn’t know them. 26 Whoever will not do the law of your God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed on him with all diligence, whether it be to death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment. 27 Blessed be the LORD, the God of our fathers, who has put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to beautify the house of the LORD which is in Yerushalayim; 28 and has extended lovingkindness to me before the king, and his counselors, and before all the king’s mighty princes. I was strengthened according to the hand of the LORD my God on me, and I gathered together out of Yisra’el chief men to go up with me.

8:1 Now these are the heads of their fathers’ [houses], and this is the genealogy of those who went up with me from Bavel, in the reign of Artachshasta the king: 2 Of the sons of Pinechas, Gershom. Of the sons of Itamar, Daniyel. Of the sons of David, Hattush. 3 Of the sons of Shekhanyahu, of the sons of Par`osh, Zekharyah; and with him were reckoned by genealogy of the males one hundred fifty. 4 Of the sons of Pachat-Mo’av, Elyeho`enai the son of Zerachyah; and with him two hundred males. 5 Of the sons of Shekhanyahu, the son of Yachazi’el; and with him three hundred males. 6 Of the sons of `Adin, `Eved the son of Yonatan; and with him fifty males. 7  Of the sons of `Elam, Yesha`yah the son of `Atalyah; and with him seventy males. 8 Of the sons of Shefatyah, Zevadyah the son of Mikha’el; and with him eighty males. 9 Of the sons of Yo’av, `Ovadyah the son of Yechi’el; and with him two hundred and eighteen males. 10 Of the sons of Shelomit, the son of Yosifyah; and with him one hundred sixty males. 11 Of the sons of Bevai, Zekharyah the son of Bevai; and with him twenty-eight males. 12 Of the sons of Azgad, Yochanan the son of Katan; and with him one hundred ten males. 13 Of the sons of Adonikam, [who were] the last; and these are their names: Elifelet, Ye`u’el, and Shemayah; and with them sixty males. 14 Of the sons of Bigvai, `Utai and Zakkur; and with them seventy males. 15 I gathered them together to the river that runs to Ahava; and there we encamped three days: and I viewed the people, and the Kohanim, and found there none of the sons of Levi. 16 Then sent I for Eli`ezer, for Ari’el, for Shemayah, and for Elnatan, and for Yariv, and for Elnatan, and for Natan, and for Zekharyah, and for Meshullam, chief men; also for Yoiariv, and for Elnatan, who were teachers. 17  I sent them forth to `Iddo the chief at the place Kasifyah; and I told them what they should tell `Iddo, [and] his brothers the temple servants, at the place Kasifyah, that they should bring to us ministers for the house of our God. 18 According to the good hand of our God on us they brought us a man of discretion, of the sons of Machli, the son of Levi, the son of Yisra’el; and Sherevyah, with his sons and his brothers, eighteen; 19 and Hashavyah, and with him Yesha`yah of the sons of Merari, his brothers and their sons, twenty; 20 and of the temple servants, whom David and the princes had given for the service of the Levites, two hundred and twenty temple servants: all of them were mentioned by name.

NEW TESTAMENT:  1 CORINTHIANS 4:1 – 23

4:1 So let a man think of us as Messiah’s servants, and stewards of God’s mysteries.

2 Here, moreover, it is required of stewards, that they be found faithful.

3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you, or by man’s judgment. Yes, I don’t judge my own self.

4 For I know nothing against myself. Yet I am not justified by this, but he who judges me is the Lord.

5 Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each man will get his praise from God.

6 Now these things, brothers, I have in a figure transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that in us you might learn not to think beyond the things which are written, that none of you be puffed up against one another.

7  For who makes you different? And what do you have that you didn’t receive? But if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

8 You are already filled. You have already become rich. You have come to reign without us. Yes, and I wish that you did reign, that we also might reign with you.

9 For, I think that God has displayed us, the apostles, last of all, like men sentenced to death. For we are made a spectacle to the world, both to angels and men.

10 We are fools for Messiah’s sake, but you are wise in Messiah. We are weak, but you are strong. You have honor, but we have dishonor.

11 Even to this present hour we hunger, thirst, are naked, are beaten, and have no certain dwelling place.

12 We toil, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless. Being persecuted, we endure.

13 Being defamed, we entreat. We are made as the filth of the world, the dirt wiped off by all, even until now.

14 I don’t write these things to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children.

15 For though you have ten thousand tutors in Messiah, yet not many fathers. For in Messiah Yeshua, I became your father through the Good News.

16 I beg you therefore, be imitators of me.

17  Because of this I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways which are in Messiah, even as I teach everywhere in every assembly.

18 Now some are puffed up, as though I were not coming to you.

19 But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord is willing. And I will know, not the word of those who are puffed up, but the power.

20 For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.

21 What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?

DECEMBER 3

PSALMS: 3, 33, 63, 93, 123

PROVERBS: 3

OLD TESTAMENT: LEVITICUS 13:1 – 59

NEW TESTAMENT: MARK 6:1 – 29

PSALMS: 3

1 A psalm of David,

when he fled from Avshalom his son:

ADONAI, how many enemies I have!

How countless are those attacking me;

2 how countless those who say of me,

“There is no salvation for him in God.”

(Selah)

3 But you, ADONAI, are a shield for me;

you are my glory, you lift my head high.

4 With my voice I call out to ADONAI,

and he answers me from his holy hill.

(Selah)

5 I lie down and sleep, then wake up again,

because ADONAI sustains me.

6 I am not afraid of the tens of thousands

set against me on every side.

7 Rise up, ADONAI!

Save me, my God!

For you slap all my enemies in the face,

you smash the teeth of the wicked.

8 Victory comes from ADONAI;

may your blessing rest on your people.

(Selah)

PSALMS: 33

1 Rejoice in ADONAI, you righteous!

Praise is well-suited to the upright.

2 Give thanks to ADONAI with the lyre,

sing praises to him with a ten-stringed harp.

3 Sing to him a new song,

make music at your best among shouts of joy.

4 For the word of ADONAI is true,

and all his work is trustworthy.

5 He loves righteousness and justice;

the earth is full of the grace of ADONAI.

6 By the word of ADONAI the heavens were made,

and their whole host by a breath from his mouth.

7 He collects the sea waters together in a heap;

he puts the deeps in storehouses.

8 Let all the earth fear ADONAI!

Let all living in the world stand in awe of him.

9 For he spoke, and there it was;

he commanded, and there it stood.

10 ADONAI brings to nothing the plans of nations,

he foils the plans of the peoples.

11 But the counsel of ADONAI stands forever,

his heart’s plans are for all generations.

12 How blessed is the nation whose God is ADONAI,

the people he chose as his heritage!

13 ADONAI looks out from heaven;

he sees every human being;

14 from the place where he lives he

watches everyone living on earth,

15 he who fashioned the hearts of them

all and understands all they do.

16 A king is not saved by the size of his army,

a strong man not delivered by his great strength.

17 To rely on a horse for safety is vain,

nor does its great power assure escape.

18 But ADONAI’s eyes watch over those who fear him,

over those who wait for his grace

19 to rescue them from death

and keep them alive in famine.

20 We are waiting for ADONAI;

he is our help and shield.

21 For in him our hearts rejoice,

because we trust in his holy name.

22 May your mercy, ADONAI, be over us,

because we put our hope in you.

PSALMS: 63

1 A psalm of David,

when he was in the desert of Y’hudah:

O God, you are my God;

I will seek you eagerly.

My heart thirsts for you,

my body longs for you in a land parched and exhausted,

where no water can be found.

2 I used to contemplate you in the sanctuary,

seeing your power and glory;

3 for your grace is better than life.

My lips will worship you.

4 Yes, I will bless you as long as I live;

in your name I will lift up my hands.

5 I am as satisfied as with rich food;

my mouth praises you with joy on my lips

6 when I remember you on my bed

and meditate on you in the night watches.

7 For you have been my help;

in the shadow of your wings I rejoice;

8 my heart clings to you;

your right hand supports me.

9 But those who seek to destroy my life -may

they go to the lowest parts of the earth.

10 May they be given over to the power of the sword;

may they become prey for jackals.

11 But the king will rejoice in God.

Everyone who swears by him will exult,

for the mouths of liars will be silenced.

PSALMS: 93

1 ADONAI is king, robed in majesty;

ADONAI is robed, girded with strength;

The world is well established;

it cannot be moved.

2 Your throne was established long ago;

you have existed forever.

3 ADONAI, the deep is raising up, the deep is raising up

its voice, the deep is raising its crashing waves.

4 More than the sound of rushing waters or the mighty breakers of the sea,

ADONAI on high is mighty.

5 Your instructions are very sure;

holiness befits your house,

ADONAI, for all time to come.

PSALMS: 123

1 A song of ascents:

I raise my eyes to you, whose throne is in heaven.

2 As a servant looks to the hand of his master,

or a slave-girl to the hand of her mistress,

so our eyes turn to ADONAI our God,

until he has mercy on us.

3 Have mercy on us, ADONAI, have mercy;

for we have had our fill of contempt,

4 more than our fill of scorn from the complacent

and contempt from the arrogant.

PROVERBS: 3

1 My son, don’t forget my teaching,

keep my commands in your heart;

2 for they will add to you many days,

years of life and peace.

3 Do not let grace and truth leave you -bind them around your neck;

write them on the tablet of your heart.

4 Then you will win favor and esteem

in the sight of God and of people.

5 Trust in ADONAI with all your heart;

do not rely on your own understanding.

6 In all your ways acknowledge him;

then he will level your paths.

7 Don’t be conceited about your own wisdom;

but fear ADONAI, and turn from evil.

8 This will bring health to your body

and give strength to your bones.

9 Honor ADONAI with your wealth

and with the firstfruits of all your income.

10 Then your granaries will be filled

and your vats overflow with new wine.

11 My son, don’t despise ADONAI’s discipline

or resent his reproof;

12 for ADONAI corrects those he loves

like a father who delights in his son.

13 Happy the person who finds wisdom,

the person who acquires understanding;

14 for her profit exceeds that of silver,

gaining her is better than gold,

15 she is more precious than pearls -nothing

you want can compare with her.

16 Long life is in her right hand,

riches and honor in her left.

17 Her ways are pleasant ways,

and all her paths are peace.

18 She is a tree of life to those who grasp her;

whoever holds fast to her will be made happy.

19 ADONAI by wisdom founded the earth,

by understanding he established the heavens,

20 by his knowledge the deep [springs] burst open

and the dew condenses from the sky.

21 My son, don’t let these slip from your sight;

preserve common sense and discretion;

22 they will be life for your being

and grace for your neck.

23 Then you will walk your way securely,

without hurting your foot.

24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid;

when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

25 Don’t be afraid of sudden terror or destruction caused by the wicked,

when it comes;

26 for you can rely on ADONAI;

he will keep your foot from being caught in a trap.

27 Don’t withhold good from someone entitled to it when

you have in hand the power to do it.

28 Don’t tell your neighbor, “Go away!

Come another time;

I’ll give it to you tomorrow,”

when you have it now.

29 Don’t plan harm against your neighbor who lives beside you trustingly.

30 Don’t quarrel with someone for no reason, if he has done you no harm.

31 Don’t envy a man of violence, don’t choose any of his ways;

32 for the perverse is an abomination to ADONAI,

but he shares his secret counsel with the upright.

33 ADONAI’s curse is in the house of the wicked,

but he blesses the home of the righteous.

34 The scornful he scorns,

but gives grace to the humble.

35 The wise win honor,

but fools win shame.

OLD TESTAMENT: LEVITICUS 13:1 – 59

1 The LORD spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying,

2 “When a man shall have a rising in his body’s skin, or a scab, or a bright spot, and it becomes in the skin of his body the plague of leprosy, then he shall be brought to Aharon the Kohen, or to one of his sons the Kohanim:

3 and the Kohen shall examine the plague in the skin of the body: and if the hair in the plague has turned white, and the appearance of the plague is deeper than the body’s skin, it is the plague of leprosy; and the Kohen shall examine him, and pronounce him unclean.

4 If the bright spot is white in the skin of his body, and the appearance of it isn’t deeper than the skin, and the hair of it hasn’t turned white, then the Kohen shall isolate the infected person for seven days.

5 The Kohen shall examine him on the seventh day, and, behold, if in his eyes the plague is arrested, and the plague hasn’t spread in the skin, then the Kohen shall isolate him for seven more days.

6 The Kohen shall examine him again on the seventh day; and, behold, if the plague has faded, and the plague hasn’t spread in the skin, then the Kohen shall pronounce him clean. It is a scab. He shall wash his clothes, and be clean.

7 But if the scab spreads on the skin, after he has shown himself to the Kohen for his cleansing, he shall show himself to the Kohen again.

8 The Kohen shall examine him; and, behold, if the scab has spread on the skin, then the Kohen shall pronounce him unclean. It is leprosy.

9 “When the plague of leprosy is in a man, then he shall be brought to the Kohen;

10 and the Kohen shall examine him. Behold, if there is a white rising in the skin, and it has turned the hair white, and there is raw flesh in the rising,

11 it is a chronic leprosy in the skin of his body, and the Kohen shall pronounce him unclean. He shall not isolate him, for he is unclean.

12 “If the leprosy breaks out all over the skin, and the leprosy covers all the skin of the infected person from his head even to his feet, as far as it appears to the Kohen;

13 then the Kohen shall examine him; and, behold, if the leprosy has covered all his flesh, he shall pronounce him clean of the plague. It has all turned white: he is clean.

14 But whenever raw flesh appears in him, he shall be unclean.

15 The Kohen shall examine the raw flesh, and pronounce him unclean: the raw flesh is unclean. It is leprosy.

16 Or if the raw flesh turns again, and is changed to white, then he shall come to the Kohen;

17 and the Kohen shall examine him; and, behold, if the plague has turned white, then the Kohen shall pronounce him clean of the plague. He is clean.

18 “When the body has a boil on its skin, and it has healed,

19 and in the place of the boil there is a white rising, or a bright spot, reddish-white, then it shall be shown to the Kohen;

20 and the Kohen shall examine it; and, behold, if the appearance of it is lower than the skin, and the hair of it has turned white, then the Kohen shall pronounce him unclean. It is the plague of leprosy. It has broken out in the boil.

21 But if the Kohen examines it, and, behold, there are no white hairs in it, and it isn’t deeper than the skin, but is dim, then the Kohen shall isolate him seven days.

22 If it spreads in the skin, then the Kohen shall pronounce him unclean. It is a plague.

23 But if the bright spot stays in its place, and hasn’t spread, it is the scar from the boil; and the Kohen shall pronounce him clean.

24 “Or when the body has a burn from fire on its skin, and the raw flesh of the burn becomes a bright spot, reddish-white, or white,

25 then the Kohen shall examine it; and, behold, if the hair in the bright spot has turned white, and the appearance of it is deeper than the skin; it is leprosy. It has broken out in the burning, and the Kohen shall pronounce him unclean. It is the plague of leprosy.

26 But if the Kohen examines it, and, behold, there is no white hair in the bright spot, and it isn’t lower than the skin, but is faded; then the Kohen shall isolate him seven days.

27 The Kohen shall examine him on the seventh day. If it has spread in the skin, then the Kohen shall pronounce him unclean. It is the plague of leprosy.

28 If the bright spot stays in its place, and hasn’t spread in the skin, but is faded, it is the swelling from the burn, and the Kohen shall pronounce him clean; for it is the scar from the burn.

29 “When a man or woman has a plague on the head or on the beard,

30 then the Kohen shall examine the plague; and, behold, if the appearance of it is deeper than the skin, and the hair in it is yellow and thin, then the Kohen shall pronounce him unclean: it is an itch, it is leprosy of the head or of the beard.

31 If the Kohen examines the plague of itching, and, behold, its appearance isn’t deeper than the skin, and there is no black hair in it, then the Kohen shall isolate him the person infected with itching seven days.

32 On the seventh day the Kohen shall examine the plague; and, behold, if the itch hasn’t spread, and there is no yellow hair in it, and the appearance of the itch isn’t deeper than the skin,

33 then he shall be shaved, but he shall not shave the itch; and the Kohen shall shut him up who has the itch seven more days.

34 On the seventh day, the Kohen shall examine the itch; and, behold, if the itch hasn’t spread in the skin, and its appearance isn’t deeper than the skin, then the Kohen shall pronounce him clean. He shall wash his clothes, and be clean.

35 But if the itch spreads in the skin after his cleansing,

36 then the Kohen shall examine him; and, behold, if the itch has spread in the skin, the Kohen shall not look for the yellow hair; he is unclean.

37 But if in his eyes the itch is arrested, and black hair has grown in it; the itch is healed, he is clean. The Kohen shall pronounce him clean.

38 “When a man or a woman has bright spots in the skin of the body, even white bright spots;

39 then the Kohen shall examine them; and, behold, if the bright spots on the skin of their body are a dull white, it is a harmless rash, it has broken out in the skin; he is clean.

40 “If a man’s hair has fallen from his head, he is bald. He is clean.

41 If his hair has fallen off from the front part of his head, he is forehead bald. He is clean.

42 But if there is in the bald head, or the bald forehead, a reddish-white plague; it is leprosy breaking out in his bald head, or his bald forehead.

43 Then the Kohen shall examine him; and, behold, if the rising of the plague is reddish-white in his bald head, or in his bald forehead, like the appearance of leprosy in the skin of the flesh,

44 he is a leprous man. He is unclean. The Kohen shall surely pronounce him unclean. His plague is on his head.

45 “The leper in whom the plague is shall wear torn clothes, and the hair of his head shall hang loose. He shall cover his upper lip, and shall cry, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’

46 All the days in which the plague is in him he shall be unclean. He is unclean. He shall dwell alone. Outside of the camp shall be his dwelling.

47 “The garment also that the plague of leprosy is in, whether it is a woolen garment, or a linen garment;

48whether it is in warp, or woof; of linen, or of wool; whether in a skin, or in anything made of skin;

49 if the plague is greenish or reddish in the garment, or in the skin, or in the warp, or in the woof, or in anything made of skin; it is the plague of leprosy, and shall be shown to the Kohen.

50 The Kohen shall examine the plague, and isolate the plague seven days.

51 He shall examine the plague on the seventh day. If the plague has spread in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in the skin, whatever use the skin is used for, the plague is a destructive mildew. It is unclean.

52 He shall burn the garment, whether the warp or the woof, in wool or in linen, or anything of skin, in which the plague is: for it is a destructive mildew. It shall be burned in the fire.

53 “If the Kohen examines it, and, behold, the plague hasn’t spread in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in anything of skin;

54 then the Kohen shall command that they wash the thing in which the plague is, and he shall isolate it seven more days.

55 Then the Kohen shall examine it, after the plague is washed; and, behold, if the plague hasn’t changed its color, and the plague hasn’t spread, it is unclean; you shall burn it in the fire. It is a mildewed spot, whether the bareness is inside or outside.

56 If the Kohen looks, and, behold, the plague has faded after it is washed, then he shall tear it out of the garment, or out of the skin, or out of the warp, or out of the woof:

57 and if it appears again in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in anything of skin, it is spreading. You shall burn with fire that in which the plague is.

58 The garment, either the warp, or the woof, or whatever thing of skin it is, which you shall wash, if the plague has departed from them, then it shall be washed the second time, and it will be clean.”

59 This is the law of the plague of mildew in a garment of wool or linen, either in the warp, or the woof, or in anything of skin, to pronounce it clean, or to pronounce it unclean.

NEW TESTAMENT: MARK 6:1 – 29

6:1 He went out from there. He came into his own country, and his talmidim followed him.

2 When the Shabbat had come, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many hearing him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things?” and, “What is the wisdom that is given to this man, that such mighty works come about by his hands?

3 Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Miryam, and brother of Ya`akov, Yosi, Yehudah, and Shim`on? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” They were offended by him.

4 Yeshua said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his own relatives, and in his own house.”

5 He could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick folk, and healed them.

6 He marveled because of their unbelief. He went around the villages teaching.

7 He called to himself the twelve, and began to send them out two by two; and he gave them authority over the unclean spirits.

8 He charged them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a staff only: no bread, no wallet, no money in their purse,

9 but to wear sandals, and not put on two tunics.

10He said to them, “Wherever you enter into a house, stay there until you depart from there.

11 Whoever will not receive you nor hear you, as you depart from there, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony against them. Assuredly, I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sedom and `Amorah in the day of judgment than for that city!”

12 They went out and preached that people should repent.

13 They cast out many demons, and anointed many with oil who were sick, and healed them.

14 King Herod heard this, for his name had become known, and he said, “Yochanan the immerser has risen from the dead, and therefore these powers work in him.”

15 But others said, “It is Eliyah.” Others said, “It is the Prophet, or like one of the prophets.”

16 But Herod, when he heard this, said, “This is Yochanan, whom I beheaded. He has risen from the dead.”

17 For Herod himself had sent out and arrested Yochanan, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Pilipos’s wife, for he had married her.

18 For Yochanan said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”

19 Herodias set herself against him, and desired to kill him, but she couldn’t,

20 for Herod feared Yochanan, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he did many things, and he heard him gladly.

21 When a convenient day had come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper for his lords, and the high captains, and the chief men of the Galil;

22 and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and those reclining with him. The king said to the young lady, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”

23 He swore to her, “Whatever you shall ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”

24 She went out, and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” She said, “The head of Yochanan the immerser.”

25 She came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, “I want you to give me right now the head of Yochanan the immerser on a platter.”

26 The king was exceedingly sorry, but for the sake of his oaths, and of his dinner guests, he didn’t wish to refuse her.

27 Immediately the king sent forth a soldier of his guard, and commanded to bring Yochanan’s head, and he went and beheaded him in the prison,

28 and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the young lady; and the young lady gave it to her mother.

29 When his talmidim heard this, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

PSALMS: 1, 31, 61, 91, 121

PROVERBS: 1

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 42:18 – 43:34

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 13:47 – 14:12

PSALMS: 1

1 How blessed are those who reject the advice of the wicked,

don’t stand on the way of sinners or sit where scoffers sit!

2 Their delight is in ADONAI’s Torah;

on his Torah they meditate day and night.

In you, ADONAI, I take refuge;

let me never be put to shame;

in your justice, save me!

5 Into your hand I commit my spirit;

you will redeem me, ADONAI, God of truth.

6 I hate those who serve worthless idols;

as for me, I trust in ADONAI.

7  I will rejoice and be glad in your grace,

for you see my affliction,

you know how distressed I am.

8 You did not hand me over to the enemy;

you set my feet where I can move freely.

9 Show me favor, ADONAI, for I am in trouble.

My eyes grow dim with anger, my soul and body as well.

10 For my life is worn out with sorrow and my years with sighing;

my strength gives out under my guilt, and my bones are wasting away.

11 I am scorned by all my adversaries, and even more by my neighbors;

even to acquaintances I am an object of fear when they see me in the street,

they turn away from me.

12 Like a dead man, I have passed from their minds;

I have become like a broken pot.

13 All I hear is whispering, terror is all around me;

they plot together against me, scheming to take my life.

14 But I, I trust in you, ADONAI; I say, “You are my God.”

15 My times are in your hand;

rescue me from my enemies’ power, from those who persecute me.

16 Make your face shine on your servant;

in your grace, save me.

17 ADONAI, don’t let me be put to shame,

for I have called on you;

let the wicked be put to shame, l

et them be silenced in Sh’ol.

3 he will rescue you from the trap of the hunter and from the plague of calamities;

4 he will cover you with his pinions,

and under his wings you will find refuge;

his truth is a shield and protection.

5 You will not fear the terrors of night or the arrow that flies by day,

6 or the plague that roams in the dark,

or the scourge that wreaks havoc at noon.

7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand;

but it won’t come near you.

8 Only keep your eyes open, and you will see how the wicked are punished.

9 For you have made ADONAI, the Most High,

who is my refuge, your dwelling-place.

10 No disaster will happen to you,

no calamity will come near your tent;

11 for he will order his angels to care for you and guard you wherever you go.

12 They will carry you in their hands,

so that you won’t trip on a stone.

13 You will tread down lions and snakes,

young lions and serpents you will trample underfoot.

14 “Because he loves me, I will rescue him;

because he knows my name, I will protect him.

7 ADONAI will guard you against all harm;

he will guard your life.

8 ADONAI will guard your coming and going from now on and forever.

PROVERBS: 1

1 The proverbs of Shlomo the son of David, king of Isra’el,

2 are for learning about wisdom and discipline; f

or understanding words expressing deep insight;

3 for gaining an intelligently disciplined life,

doing what is right, just and fair;

4 for endowing with caution those who don’t think and the

young person with knowledge and discretion.

5 Someone who is already wise will hear and learn still more;

someone who already understands will gain the ability to counsel well;

6 he will understand proverbs, obscure expressions,

the sayings and riddles of the wise.

7 The fear of ADONAI is the beginning of knowledge,

but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

8 My son, heed the discipline of your father,

and do not abandon the teaching of your mother;

9 they will be a garland to grace your head,

a medal of honor for your neck.

10 My son, if sinners entice you,

don’t go along with them.

11 Suppose they say, “Come with us:

we’ll ambush somebody and kill him,

we’ll waylay some harmless soul, just for fun;

12 we’ll swallow him alive, like Sh’ol, whole,

like those who descend to the pit;

13 we’ll find everything he has of value,

we’ll fill our homes with loot!

14 Throw in your lot with us;

we’ll share a common purse”-

15 my son, don’t go along with them,

don’t set foot on their path;

16 Their feet run to evil, they rush to shed blood.

17 For in vain is the net baited if any bird can see it;

18 rather, they are ambushing themselves

to shed their own blood, waylaying themselves.

19 So are the ways of all greedy for gain -it takes the lives of those who get it.

20 Wisdom calls aloud in the open air and raises her voice in the public places;

25 but instead you neglected my counsel and would not accept my reproof;

26 I, in turn, will laugh at your distress,

and mock when terror comes over you

27 yes, when terror overtakes you like a storm and your disaster approaches like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble assail you.

28 Then they will call me, but I won’t answer;

they will seek me earnestly, but they won’t find me.

29 Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of ADONAI,

30 they refused my counsel and despised my reproof.

31 So they will bear the consequences of their own way

and be overfilled with their own schemes.

32 For the aimless wandering of the thoughtless will kill them,

and the smug overconfidence of fools will destroy them;

24 He turned himself about from them, and wept, and he returned to them, and spoke to them, and took Shim`on from among them, and bound him before their eyes. 25 Then Yosef commanded to fill their vessels with grain, and to restore every man’s money into his sack, and to give them provisions for the way. Thus was it done to them. 26 They loaded their donkeys with their grain, and departed from there. 27 As one of them opened his sack to give his donkey food in the lodging-place, he saw his money. Behold, it was in the mouth of his sack. 28 He said to his brothers, “My money is restored! Behold, it is even in my sack.” Their hearts failed them, and they turned trembling one to another, saying, “What is this that God has done to us?” 29 They came to Ya`akov their father to the land of Kana`an, and told him all that had befallen them, saying, 30 “The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly with us, and took us for spies of the country. 31 We said to him, ‘We are honest men. We are no spies. 32 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Kana`an.’ 33 The man, the lord of the land, said to us, ‘Hereby will I know that you are honest men. 36 Ya`akov, their father, said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children! Yosef is no more, Shim`on is no more, and you want to take Binyamin away.

Isn’t his mother called Miryam, and his brothers, Ya`akov, Yosi, Shim`on, and Yehudah?

NOVEMBER 1

PSALMS: 1, 31, 61, 91, 121

PROVERBS: 1

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 42:18 – 43:34

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 13:47 – 14:12

PSALMS: 1

1 How blessed are those who reject the advice of the wicked,

don’t stand on the way of sinners or sit where scoffers sit!

2 Their delight is in ADONAI’s Torah;

on his Torah they meditate day and night.

In you, ADONAI, I take refuge;

let me never be put to shame;

in your justice, save me!

5 Into your hand I commit my spirit;

you will redeem me, ADONAI, God of truth.

6 I hate those who serve worthless idols;

as for me, I trust in ADONAI.

7  I will rejoice and be glad in your grace,

for you see my affliction,

you know how distressed I am.

8 You did not hand me over to the enemy;

you set my feet where I can move freely.

9 Show me favor, ADONAI, for I am in trouble.

My eyes grow dim with anger, my soul and body as well.

10 For my life is worn out with sorrow and my years with sighing;

my strength gives out under my guilt, and my bones are wasting away.

11 I am scorned by all my adversaries, and even more by my neighbors;

even to acquaintances I am an object of fear when they see me in the street,

they turn away from me.

12 Like a dead man, I have passed from their minds;

I have become like a broken pot.

13 All I hear is whispering, terror is all around me;

they plot together against me, scheming to take my life.

14 But I, I trust in you, ADONAI; I say, “You are my God.”

15 My times are in your hand;

rescue me from my enemies’ power, from those who persecute me.

16 Make your face shine on your servant;

in your grace, save me.

17 ADONAI, don’t let me be put to shame,

for I have called on you;

let the wicked be put to shame, l

et them be silenced in Sh’ol.

3 he will rescue you from the trap of the hunter and from the plague of calamities;

4 he will cover you with his pinions,

and under his wings you will find refuge;

his truth is a shield and protection.

5 You will not fear the terrors of night or the arrow that flies by day,

6 or the plague that roams in the dark,

or the scourge that wreaks havoc at noon.

7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand;

but it won’t come near you.

8 Only keep your eyes open, and you will see how the wicked are punished.

9 For you have made ADONAI, the Most High,

who is my refuge, your dwelling-place.

10 No disaster will happen to you,

no calamity will come near your tent;

11 for he will order his angels to care for you and guard you wherever you go.

12 They will carry you in their hands,

so that you won’t trip on a stone.

13 You will tread down lions and snakes,

young lions and serpents you will trample underfoot.

14 “Because he loves me, I will rescue him;

because he knows my name, I will protect him.

7 ADONAI will guard you against all harm;

he will guard your life.

8 ADONAI will guard your coming and going from now on and forever.

PROVERBS: 1

1 The proverbs of Shlomo the son of David, king of Isra’el,

2 are for learning about wisdom and discipline; f

or understanding words expressing deep insight;

3 for gaining an intelligently disciplined life,

doing what is right, just and fair;

4 for endowing with caution those who don’t think and the

young person with knowledge and discretion.

5 Someone who is already wise will hear and learn still more;

someone who already understands will gain the ability to counsel well;

6 he will understand proverbs, obscure expressions,

the sayings and riddles of the wise.

7 The fear of ADONAI is the beginning of knowledge,

but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

8 My son, heed the discipline of your father,

and do not abandon the teaching of your mother;

9 they will be a garland to grace your head,

a medal of honor for your neck.

10 My son, if sinners entice you,

don’t go along with them.

11 Suppose they say, “Come with us:

we’ll ambush somebody and kill him,

we’ll waylay some harmless soul, just for fun;

12 we’ll swallow him alive, like Sh’ol, whole,

like those who descend to the pit;

13 we’ll find everything he has of value,

we’ll fill our homes with loot!

14 Throw in your lot with us;

we’ll share a common purse”-

15 my son, don’t go along with them,

don’t set foot on their path;

16 Their feet run to evil, they rush to shed blood.

17 For in vain is the net baited if any bird can see it;

18 rather, they are ambushing themselves

to shed their own blood, waylaying themselves.

19 So are the ways of all greedy for gain -it takes the lives of those who get it.

20 Wisdom calls aloud in the open air and raises her voice in the public places;

25 but instead you neglected my counsel and would not accept my reproof;

26 I, in turn, will laugh at your distress,

and mock when terror comes over you

27 yes, when terror overtakes you like a storm and your disaster approaches like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble assail you.

28 Then they will call me, but I won’t answer;

they will seek me earnestly, but they won’t find me.

29 Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of ADONAI,

30 they refused my counsel and despised my reproof.

31 So they will bear the consequences of their own way

and be overfilled with their own schemes.

32 For the aimless wandering of the thoughtless will kill them,

and the smug overconfidence of fools will destroy them;

36 Ya`akov, their father, said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children! Yosef is no more, Shim`on is no more, and you want to take Binyamin away.

Isn’t his mother called Miryam, and his brothers, Ya`akov, Yosi, Shim`on, and Yehudah?

NOVEMBER 1

PSALMS: 1, 31, 61, 91, 121

PROVERBS: 1

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 42:18 – 43:34

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 13:47 – 14:12

PSALMS: 1

1 Blessed is the man

who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked

or stand in the way of sinners

or sit in the seat of mockers.

2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,

and on his law he meditates day and night.

3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,

which yields its fruit in season

and whose leaf does not wither.

Whatever he does prospers.

4 Not so the wicked!

They are like chaff

that the wind blows away.

5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,

nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked will perish. 1

PSALMS: 31

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

1 In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge;

let me never be put to shame;

deliver me in your righteousness.

2 Turn your ear to me,

come quickly to my rescue;

be my rock of refuge,

a strong fortress to save me.

3 Since you are my rock and my fortress,

for the sake of your name lead and guide me.

4 Free me from the trap that is set for me,

for you are my refuge.

5 Into your hands I commit my spirit;

redeem me, O LORD, the God of truth.

6 I hate those who cling to worthless idols;

I trust in the LORD.

7 I will be glad and rejoice in your love,

for you saw my affliction

and knew the anguish of my soul.

8 You have not handed me over to the enemy

but have set my feet in a spacious place.

9 Be merciful to me, O LORD, for I am in distress;

my eyes grow weak with sorrow,

my soul and my body with grief.

10 My life is consumed by anguish

and my years by groaning;

my strength fails because of my affliction, A

and my bones grow weak. 2

11 Because of all my enemies,

I am the utter contempt of my neighbors;

I am a dread to my friends–

those who see me on the street flee from me.

12 I am forgotten by them as though I were dead;

I have become like broken pottery.

13 For I hear the slander of many;

there is terror on every side;

they conspire against me

and plot to take my life.

14 But I trust in you, O LORD;

I say, “You are my God.”

15 My times are in your hands;

deliver me from my enemies

and from those who pursue me.

16 Let your face shine on your servant;

save me in your unfailing love.

17 Let me not be put to shame, O LORD,

for I have cried out to you;

but let the wicked be put to shame

and lie silent in the grave. B

18 Let their lying lips be silenced,

for with pride and contempt

they speak arrogantly against the righteous.

19 How great is your goodness,

which you have stored up for those who fear you,

which you bestow in the sight of men

on those who take refuge in you.

20 In the shelter of your presence you hide them

from the intrigues of men;

in your dwelling you keep them safe 3

from accusing tongues.

21 Praise be to the LORD,

for he showed his wonderful love to me

when I was in a besieged city.

22 In my alarm I said,

“I am cut off from your sight!”

Yet you heard my cry for mercy

when I called to you for help.

23 Love the LORD, all his saints!

The LORD preserves the faithful,

but the proud he pays back in full.

24 Be strong and take heart,

all you who hope in the LORD. 4

PSALMS: 61

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. Of David.

1 Hear my cry, O God;

listen to my prayer.

2 From the ends of the earth I call to you,

I call as my heart grows faint;

lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

3 For you have been my refuge,

a strong tower against the foe.

4 I long to dwell in your tent forever

and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.

Selah

5 For you have heard my vows, O God;

you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.

6 Increase the days of the king’s life,

his years for many generations.

7 May he be enthroned in God’s presence forever;

appoint your love and faithfulness to protect him.

8 Then will I ever sing praise to your name

and fulfill my vows day after day. 5

PSALMS: 91

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High

will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. A

2 I will say B of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress,

my God, in whom I trust.”

3 Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare

and from the deadly pestilence.

4 He will cover you with his feathers,

and under his wings you will find refuge;

his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

5 You will not fear the terror of night,

nor the arrow that flies by day,

6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,

nor the plague that destroys at midday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side,

ten thousand at your right hand,

but it will not come near you.

8 You will only observe with your eyes

and see the punishment of the wicked.

9 If you make the Most High your dwelling–

even the LORD, who is my refuge–

10 then no harm will befall you,

no disaster will come near your tent.

11 For he will command his angels concerning you

to guard you in all your ways;

12 they will lift you up in their hands,

so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra;

you will trample the great lion and the serpent. 6

14 Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him;

I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him;

I will be with him in trouble,

I will deliver him and honor him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him

and show him my salvation.” 7

PSALMS: 121

A song of ascents.

1 I lift up my eyes to the hills–

where does my help come from?

2 My help comes from the LORD,

the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip–

he who watches over you will not slumber;

4 indeed, he who watches over Israel

will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The LORD watches over you–

the LORD is your shade at your right hand;

6 the sun will not harm you by day,

nor the moon by night.

7 The LORD will keep you from all harm–

he will watch over your life;

8 the LORD will watch over your coming and going

both now and forevermore. 8

PROVERBS: 1

1 1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2 for attaining wisdom and discipline;

for understanding words of insight;

3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life,

doing what is right and just and fair;

4 for giving prudence to the simple,

knowledge and discretion to the young–

5 let the wise listen and add to their learning,

and let the discerning get guidance–

6 for understanding proverbs and parables,

the sayings and riddles of the wise.

7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge,

but fools A despise wisdom and discipline.

8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction

and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

9 They will be a garland to grace your head

and a chain to adorn your neck.

10 My son, if sinners entice you,

do not give in to them.

11 If they say, “Come along with us;

let’s lie in wait for someone’s blood,

let’s waylay some harmless soul;

12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, B 9

and whole, like those who go down to the pit;

13 we will get all sorts of valuable things

and fill our houses with plunder;

14 throw in your lot with us,

and we will share a common purse”–

15 my son, do not go along with them,

do not set foot on their paths;

16 for their feet rush into sin,

they are swift to shed blood.

17 How useless to spread a net

in full view of all the birds!

18 These men lie in wait for their own blood;

they waylay only themselves!

19 Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain;

it takes away the lives of those who get it.

20 Wisdom calls aloud in the street,

she raises her voice in the public squares;

21 at the head of the noisy streets C she cries out,

in the gateways of the city she makes her speech:

22 “How long will you simple ones D love your simple ways?

How long will mockers delight in mockery

and fools hate knowledge?

23 If you had responded to my rebuke,

I would have poured out my heart to you

and made my thoughts known to you.

24 But since you rejected me when I called

and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand,

2 5since you ignored all my advice

and would not accept my rebuke,

26 I in turn will laugh at your disaster; 10

I will mock when calamity overtakes you–

27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm,

when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind,

when distress and trouble overwhelm you.

28 Then they will call to me but I will not answer;

they will look for me but will not find me.

29 Since they hated knowledge

and did not choose to fear the LORD,

30 since they would not accept my advice

and spurned my rebuke,

31 they will eat the fruit of their ways

and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.

32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,

and the complacency of fools will destroy them;

33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety

and be at ease, without fear of harm.” 11

OLD TESTAMENT: GENESIS 42:18 – 43:34

18 On the third day, Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, for I fear God:

19 If you are honest men, let one of your brothers stay here in prison, while the rest of you go and take grain back for your starving households. 20 But you must bring your youngest brother to me, so that your words may be verified and that you may not die.” This they proceeded to do.

21 They said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen; that’s why this distress has come upon us.”

22 Reuben replied, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy? But you wouldn’t listen! Now we must give an accounting for his blood.” 23 They did not realize that Joseph could understand them, since he was using an interpreter.

24 He turned away from them and began to weep, but then turned back and spoke to them again. He had Simeon taken from them and bound before their eyes.

25 Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, to put each man’s silver back in his sack, and to give them provisions for their journey. After this was done for them,

26 they loaded their grain on their donkeys and left.

27 At the place where they stopped for the night one of them opened his sack to get feed for his donkey, and he saw his silver in the mouth of his sack. 28 “My silver has been returned,” he said to his brothers. “Here it is in my sack.”

Their hearts sank and they turned to each other trembling and said, “What is this that God has done to us?”

29 When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them. They said, 30 “The man who is lord over the land spoke harshly to us and treated us as though we were spying on the land. 31But we said to him, `We are honest men; we are not spies. 32 We were twelve brothers, sons of one father. One is no more, and the youngest is now with our father in Canaan.’

33 “Then the man who is lord over the land said to us, `This is how I will know whether you are honest men: Leave one of your brothers here with me, and take food for your starving households and go. 34 But bring your youngest brother to me so I will know that you are not spies but honest men. Then I will give your brother back to you, and you can trade A in the land.’ ”

35 As they were emptying their sacks, there in each man’s sack was his pouch of silver! When they and their father saw the money pouches, they were frightened.

36 Their father Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my children. Joseph is no more and Simeon is no more, and now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is against me!”

37 Then Reuben said to his father, “You may put both of my sons to death if I do not bring him back to you. Entrust him to my care, and I will bring him back.” 12

38 But Jacob said, “My son will not go down there with you; his brother is dead and he is the only one left. If harm comes to him on the journey you are taking, you will bring my gray head down to the grave B in sorrow.”

43 1 Now the famine was still severe in the land. 2 So when they had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go back and buy us a little more food.”

3 But Judah said to him, “The man warned us solemnly, `You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’ 4 If you will send our brother along with us, we will go down and buy food for you. 5 But if you will not send him, we will not go down, because the man said to us, `You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’ ”

6 Israel asked, “Why did you bring this trouble on me by telling the man you had another brother?”

7 They replied, “The man questioned us closely about ourselves and our family. `Is your father still living?’ he asked us. `Do you have another brother?’ We simply answered his questions. How were we to know he would say, `Bring your brother down here’?”

8 Then Judah said to Israel his father, “Send the boy along with me and we will go at once, so that we and you and our children may live and not die. 9 I myself will guarantee his safety; you can hold me personally responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him here before you, I will bear the blame before you all my life. 10 As it is, if we had not delayed, we could have gone and returned twice.”

11 Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be, then do this: Put some of the best products of the land in your bags and take them down to the man as a gift–a little balm and a little honey, some spices and myrrh, some pistachio nuts and almonds. 12 Take double the amount of silver with you, for you must return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake. 13 Take your brother also and go back to the man at once. 14 And may God Almighty A grant you mercy before the man so that he will let your other brother and Benjamin come back with you. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved.”

15 So the men took the gifts and double the amount of silver, and Benjamin also. They hurried down to Egypt and presented themselves to Joseph. 16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Take these men to my house, slaughter an animal and prepare dinner; they are to eat with me at noon.”

17 The man did as Joseph told him and took the men to Joseph’s house. 18 Now the men were frightened when they were taken to his house. 13 They thought, “We were brought here because of the silver that was put back into our sacks the first time. He wants to attack us and overpower us and seize us as slaves and take our donkeys.”

19 So they went up to Joseph’s steward and spoke to him at the entrance to the house. 20 “Please, sir,” they said, “we came down here the first time to buy food. 21 But at the place where we stopped for the night we opened our sacks and each of us found his silver–the exact weight–in the mouth of his sack. So we have brought it back with us.

22 We have also brought additional silver with us to buy food. We don’t know who put our silver in our sacks.”

23 “It’s all right,” he said. “Don’t be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks; I received your silver.” Then he brought Simeon out to them.

24 The steward took the men into Joseph’s house, gave them water to wash their feet and provided fodder for their donkeys. 14

25 They prepared their gifts for Joseph’s arrival at noon, because they had heard that they were to eat there.

26 When Joseph came home, they presented to him the gifts they had brought into the house, and they bowed down before him to the ground. 27 He asked them how they were, and then he said, “How is your aged father you told me about? Is he still living?”

28 They replied, “Your servant our father is still alive and well.” And they bowed low to pay him honor.

29 As he looked about and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother’s son, he asked, “Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?” And he said, “God be gracious to you, my son.” 30 Deeply moved at the sight of his brother, Joseph hurried out and looked for a place to weep. He went into his private room and wept there.

31 After he had washed his face, he came out and, controlling himself, said, “Serve the food.”

32 They served him by himself, the brothers by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because Egyptians could not eat with Hebrews, for that is detestable to Egyptians. 33 The men had been seated before him in the order of their ages, from the firstborn to the youngest; and they looked at each other in astonishment. 34 When portions were served to them from Joseph’s table, Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as anyone else’s. So they feasted and drank freely with him. 15

NEW TESTAMENT: MATTHEW 13:47 – 14:12

47 Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away.

49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

51Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked.

“Yes,” they replied.

52 He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has been instructed about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”

53 When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there. 54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked.

55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took offense at him.

But Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown and in his own house is a prophet without honor.”

58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.

14 1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, 2 and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, 4 for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered him a prophet.

6 On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for them and pleased Herod so much 7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”

9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted 10 and had John beheaded in the prison. 11 His head was brought 16in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. 12 John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus. 17
